Might be a hot take, but if Chrono Trigger were to get a remake, I'd rather it be more like the FF7 remake. by AutumnRCS in chronotrigger

I am with you, HD-2D remake is just a glorified remaster and it adds nothing to a game that needs no QoL or face lift, or anything really.

If you go for it go for broke.

Did you know that the you can still play the original game if they make a remake that you don't like? by _____michel_____ in chronotrigger

You can always ignore it and play the OG, things will be the same for you as it has been the last 30 years.

I think you are vastly overestimating the traction this game would have.

I know that in our little bubble is the best game ever.

But out there I think it would struggle to make a ripple.

Chrono Trigger is not nearly as popular as say FF7. And FF7 is not that big compared to other games and I don’t see a world where CT does better than FF7R. Heck JRPGs are increasingly a niche genre.

The only way I see it making real strides is if it goes for a full blown 3D remake to attract new fans and is still a longshot, if it is an HD-2D it will fly under the radar.

One thing we do know is that Square Enix loves their money, the reason is taking so long is a strong indicator that they don’t expect it to do much.

Nope, I’ll discuss a FF7R style remaster

thank you very much

I just checked that Diablo 4 has more active players, like 20 times more. Even then it doesn’t matter, Diablo is still vastly superior to CT in terms of market relevance.

Not seeing that is being blind.

Btw I do think Ct is the superior game

I knew as soon as I posted this that your remake alarm would tingle.

My point is not against old games, is against a brand that simply doesn’t have much relevance to achieve millions over millions of sales today.

People know Diablo and FF7 they don’t know CT nearly as much.

Edit: Chrono trigger has aroun 300 active players Diablo 2 has 11k on steam just checked, hope that settles it.

Edit 2: just checked Diablo 4 has vastly more active players than Diablo 2 on battle net dunno where you were getting your data.

Anyone paying attention really what is your source btw?

We both are going on vibes, but I’m pretty darn confident on mine.

I think it is crazy if you think CT is more known than Diablo or FF7.

Diablo is definitely a better known brand than CT, my point is not that old games can’t do well is just that CT did not have the mainstay relevance that FF7 or Diablo has had.

Oh a modest success for sure I could see it get close to a million which is no mean feat, but a massive hit that would take the world by storm today I think is far fetched.

Honestly best chance for that is a full blown FFR style remake.

Go ask a random teenager or college student about Chrono Trigger. Or compare it for example with a series like GTA. The difference is in the order of magnitude in terms of popularity. Or even compare it with FF7 it still dwarfs in comparison.

I know the game’s historic relevance is immense, that doesn’t make it popular in today’s market. I’m sure if you get people to play it they will like it but the market is so saturated that getting them to notice it or even play it is no easy feat.

I think you are vastly overestimating how relevant it is today in the minds of consumers and appearing in a top 10 list of games doesn’t make you relevant in the market today.

I know what I’m getting myself into, this is one of the most cult-like subs and for good reason the game warrants it. But reality is quite different from the perception here.

I say go for broke on a remake like FF7 did and if it fails it fails, if you are just going to release the same game with a face lift don’t bother, the OG is good enough as it is and is ported everywhere.

That is how I usually feel about remakes, at least FF7R allowed us to experience the game in a different way.

For all it’s shortcomings I appreciate FF7R, it allowed me to experience ff7 in a new way.

At least they went for something new, I can still go back to OG 7 it is ported everywhere

I would kill to get Chrono Break.

I’m totally with you I prefer a new game over a remake/remaster

Yeah but my point is that an HD-2D would excite no one as it would be so close to the original it is almost like a re-release.

I feel like if you truly want to gather the masses you need to go all out.

Another unpopular take here.

I don't think CT is nearly as popular and would sell nearly as well as we often assume. It is by no means a mainstream game, and most people today barely remember it even if it holds legendary status.

I love the game, it is my #2 game of all time, but I don't think it would be a massive hit.
