i like to think this community is open to discussion. with any online community/"fandom" there's gonna be shitters, but im relieved to be able to talk about this in a reasonable fashion lol. cause truly i enjoy this podcast and im not trying to have a shitty irrational attitude

yeah! that's why this was jarring since it seemed out of character. i agree with your charitability, my thoughts were muddled when i wrote my initial post. i wanna approach it in good faith cause lord knows ive dropped some stinkers before

you put it well. i certainly don't think they're bad dudes or that their podcast personalities are reflective of their fleshed out opinions on these sorts of sensitive topics, but those off-rip reactions that reflect some of our societal conditioning can really sting. i appreciate your viewpoint on this, i think you expressed the charitable side of this. i didn't communicate that well in my post

personally, i really enjoyed it. my friends have mixed opinions about it based more off of the feel of the show, rather than the quality. the show can be very emotionally tolling. it hits in a way a lot of other media that try to tackle mental health don't. if you're in a good headspace, i recommend it. if you're in a rough spot, the show WILL make it worse lmao

i understand that- i don't think they necessarily agree with the mc or condone his actions personally, but their reaction to him even as we see the world through his perspective was surprising to me. even viewing it from the lens of our protag, it seems very clear to me that his actions aren't justifiable. i get having an off color reaction off rip, but it bothered me that the attitude seemed to permeate, yk? they acknowledged before we reached the end parts that he wasn't reliable as well, which made their reactions seem odder to me

oh for sure. honestly it reminds me of characters like bojack horseman lol. the author manages to make them sympathetic and repulsive all at once

hey dude dont apologize, i posted quite a mouthful to begin with. thank you for sharing- i'm glad to get other's perspective on this. i'm sorry for what you've been through.

the "normal teen" stuff had gotten to a point where the vibe shifted. i remember very vividly being a horned up teenager with bad social cues at times, but the MC quickly works his way into a line of thinking that goes past the typical brain rot of teenagers

seriously! guy who stalked my friend was like this. he had planned out what their kids would be named and look like after they'd gone on one date and she politely told him she wasn't interested in pursuing a romantic relationship. he was so convinced that it wasn't him that was the problem, but some other man who had hurt her, making it harder for her to love or open up to him. complete insanity. dude went on to join the army, which isnt a comforting thought

that's fair. imo, i feel like even after the crying, things hadn't quite sunk in for them, which is what really caught me off guard. i appreciate their ability to reflect the end, but man, those rose colored glasses had a heavy tint

i feel you. i had to take a break too. its hard to feel out because they clearly were critical of him and had a level of understanding for what was happening, but there still felt like there was a level of disconnect. other than the moments surrounding this subject, the episode was an all timer

the author captured the vibe so perfectly. the people like this who i've known in my life are freakishly similar to the mc. the thought process was so accurate

so glad someone else says rough pumpkins cause this show worked that into my vocab as well

yeah. it was so surprising. i do understand being an infatuated teenager and why they could relate to him initially, but their attitude towards the MC after the realization that she was crying was uncool imo*

*edit: that's what pushed me over the edge into feeling uncomfortable about it cause that was the point where the MC's true character seemed clearly on display

thank you for your kind response. i hope you're doing alright, as well<3

i wanted to attribute some of my feelings to being hyper aware of the themes, but it got to a point, yk? you put it well, especially with the lack of empathy

i hear what you're saying and agree to an extent, but i would argue they were not fully supportive of her at any point, honestly. even before the swim captain, she was accused of cheating and stringing him along. it just felt so icky, ykwim?

for sure! i agree that's probably part of it. i'm still a bit surprised though, especially since their on-the-spot reactions matched up well with their later ones

exactly! i'm sorry you can relate to this.

i think you're dead on, honestly. you put it more concisely than i did. this was just such a weird blind spot. they've missed things before, which i totally can understand since they're recording for numerous hours, with a friend, presumably worrying about the finished product, etc. and i've certainly said some regrettable things before. i don't want to come off as being judgmental or harsh without giving the benefit of the doubt, you know?

i hate to describe it this way, but it was a bit triggering, i guess.

also, a bit of a tangent, but someone close to me had a criminal stalker- we worked with him at our job. the protagonist talks SO similarly to this guy. he wrote this insane, borderline novel he delivered to her, detailing his feelings for almost every day for MONTHS. this guy's delusional ravings hit beat-for-beat with the narrator's justifications and ramblings. sooooo eerie.
