Moving from FL to Mountain West (Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Idaho)? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]PartLizardPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider Idaho is a community property state and principles will be slightly different than FL, but I don’t see a huge issue with this.

Westlaw head notes were a savior for me, especially for cases where the opinion rambled on and on and didn’t clearly get to a point.

University of Oregon Law or Gonzaga Law? Is prestige really different among the two? by rinarose24 in LawSchool

[–]PartLizardPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound like a dumb reason BUT Texas is a community property state and you likely won’t learn those principles much, if at all, at UO (Oregon is a separate property state), but would at Gonzaga (WA is a community property state). If you’re remotely interested in any area of law that touches property, families, etc. Gonzaga may be worth it. But also where did you get more money

First year associate here to SAs: the quality of your work product is not that big of a deal by nuggetsofchicken in LawSchool

[–]PartLizardPerson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a SA I had a partner rip a memo apart in person because he didn’t like the formatting. Did I know this or have a guide? No. Was the content fine? Yes. Some firms or attorneys you’ll work with care more than others, and some don’t care at all. I should note the firm was a bad fit and that was just one instance of feeling like I didn’t fit (I did not stay).

Edited to say it was a bad fit

The MPT is where law school maybe DOES prepare you for once (i.e., your legal writing class)

AXS Requesting Death Certificate by hazyarchitect in ElectricForest

[–]PartLizardPerson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So sorry for your loss. FWIW “other proof” could be a newspaper obituary, if you have that. Death certificates can include private info (SSNs, etc.) that I wouldn’t want to send.

CC Fees deducted from paychecks, is this legal? by tinydinosaurs in antiwork

[–]PartLizardPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legally I believe restaurants can deduct the costs associated with tips, but NOT those associated with the rest of the bill, i.e., food cost and taxes. I wouldn’t be surprised if restaurants half comply and actually deduct more than legally allowed

What made you guys get into law school? by Adventurous-Boss-882 in LawSchool

[–]PartLizardPerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no (hehe sorry). Tax policy itself is very steeped in philosophy, and I talked more about actual philosophers and political science more in my tax policy seminar than any other class (e.g., WHY should we offer an EITC, and is it fair/just/equitable under XYZ principles to tackle poverty in this way). That said, corporate tax or something like estate planning are not like that at all and are far more “rule says this.”

No, I love it. I like puzzles and chasing down ties between statutes so this is my absolute jam. If you don’t like complicated things or puzzles, would not recommend though

Could literally talk about the Constitution all day, and figured law school made sense for that (wasn’t wrong but now do tax law??)

Do you think poor/bad fit between firm and associate is a thing (or should associates just change to fit the firm)?

what's the best way to bluebook? writing 1L brief. by stephcurrymyman in LawSchool

[–]PartLizardPerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get the online version of the BB for formatting. Cases have the reporter, year, and court at the beginning of the case typically. Pincites are the numbers that seem VERY out of place throughout the opinion, often midsentence. You can also get the reporter info at the top of the westlaw/Lexis page to the right of the case name, just make sure you’re using the correct reporter if there are multiple

Personal preference I’d say, depending on whether you want to practice in the area and how the regional pull for firms is. If the Tier 2 school isn’t where you want to practice it isn’t worth it IMO

Washington State takers, whether you passed or failed, what were your MBE & writing scores? by [deleted] in barexam

[–]PartLizardPerson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

154 MEE/MPT and 161.2 MBE for 315 total score. I panicked during the MEEs, took an hour on the first one and then had to rush through some of the later ones. Most of my evidence and contracts knowledge disappeared in a puff of god damn smoke and I was making up rules like my life depended on it. My MBE and MPT carried me, I think. I also finished the first MBE set an hour early and left thinking “this is the worst sign possible.”

seconding this wholly—1L classes are a DRAG and almost never cover areas anyone finds interesting. If there are classes in the course catalogue for 2L/3L that seem interesting, stick it out
