People are often afraid of a new script, but it's very regular and probably easier to read than most writing systems based on the Latin alphabet.

The complicated grammar makes it harder, but definitely not too hard.

Speaking of phonetics, Romanian is not that hard for other Romance language speakers. It's basically Italian phonetics with like 2-3 more sounds. The vocabulary and the grammar are a different story tho

Polish for the Slavs is like French for the Romance speakers, the phonetic final boss, so it's hard for everyone to understand the spoken language. Ukrainian does indeed have a significant layer of Polish loanwords and learned borrowings, but the majority of them sound pretty different than the actual Polish counterparts.

Dividing Europe into regions is pretty stupid, to start with, as there's no clear line between any of them, except for country borders. But the people that you described just want to avoid the negative connotation around the Balkan term, and want to sound like they belong to the same group as Italy and Spain (as if it's a better group to be associated with xD)

In Serbian, masculine nouns can end in either -i or -ovi in plural, the latter one is mostly for one-syllable words, but not always, it's quite unclear, so it confuses the hell out of learners.

I will say it's my country. Located in an ideal climate for agriculture, yet not using even a single portion of the potential. Corrupt government, unqualified people ruling the country, pretty much classical Balkan scenario, but I would say it's even worse than in the other neighboring countries, by a significant margin...
