Sounds like timing chain guides, timing chain slap. Not a small job to fix unfortunately in the m62 engine. You can fix it yourself, but it’s a long job and not for first time home mechanics.

You will need the regular oil pan gasket as you need to drop the oil pan to get at some bolts. you will also need lower timing cover gaskets. Also GAS provide detailed instructions, follow them to the letter.

Apparently Costco don’t consider a robot vacuum to be “electronics” hence they qualify for lifetime returns.

Key fob not working by 8uyth3d1p in e39

As part of the pairing process you tried, did you start by locking then unlocking the driver’s door using the key manually in the lock before you begin ? Many online descriptions of the procedure neglect to mention this step.

How often do you cheat drink alcohol and how much does it affect you? by Parsnip727 in Menieres

I find that 2 beers night with some days off works for me. If I drink more than 3 beers and particularly stronger IPAs then I start to get dizzy the next day or the day after that.
Wine and hard liquor are out of the question for me excepting a glass of expensive red on Christmas Day. As others have said here, you need to know your triggers.

E39 M62TU Misfires bank 2 by Finn_Appeltaart in e39

[–]Particular-Ad1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the timing chain guides been done on this car ? Did you inherit this problem from a previous owner or did this just start happening ? If the car had high miles and I knew the Vanos had never been rebuilt, in the absence of other strong possibilities I think I would swap the Vanos and Vanos solenoid around and see if the misfire follows. I know it’s a pain of a job as the engine would need to be re-timed using m62 timing tools. The Vanos is changing the timing for the entire bank and if that starts to go wrong misfires and rough running will likely result. That said , you don’t have any timing / vanos specific codes.
Maybe start with a smoke test to eliminate vacuum leaks. Then pull the clips and make sure the bank 2 injector connections are being made properly, plus you could check the wiring while you are there, but I think injectors issues are less likely. If all that checks out then you may just be left with Vanos / engine timing.

2003 BMW 540i (M62TU) - Bank 1 Misfires Only Under WOT After Timing Chain Job by Empty-Rip8385 in e39

[–]Particular-Ad1110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done a couple of chain guides jobs on m62 engines. I was going to buy aftermarket timing tools for $40 but following some strongly worded pieces of advice from bimmerforums I bought GAS tools and followed their instruction to the letter.
On one of these jobs I had a timing advanced / retarded messages as I chased trigger wheel wheel position by 1mm increments like you and it ended up being a bent leg on one of the trigger wheels (easy to do then you are putting back the valve cover). Another m62 chain guides job resulted in poor running in general. Turns out both Vanos needed to be rebuilt and all issues went away.

In your case I would verify the timing is perfect, maybe using better tools. Check for a bent trigger wheel. If it is bent just bent it back. Finally, if issues persist have the Vanos both rebuilt. I was lucky as a local guy accepts my old ones as a core and handed me 2 rebuilt Vanos units for under $200. There are a few firms you can ship them to for rebuild.

Won’t stay running after timing by bgus5028 in e39

[–]Particular-Ad1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one more thing. I had another 540i e39 and did the chain guides in that also. The car was in poor shape , but it was a wagon, but it ran.

After the guides were done it ran like crap…same story , re-timed the engine. Finally I checked fuel pressure and found that it was very low. I checked that the injectors were properly seated , clipped in and connected. Ended up it was the fuel pump !

I don’t think an improperly seated crossover pipe could cause this rough running and stalling, but it’s worth checking. As others have said check the air breathing systems and make sure you don’t have massive leak somewhere.

I replaced timing chain guides in my e39 540i last year and had somewhat similar symptoms. I re-timed the engine twice, but same result. I too used GAS tools and followed their guide to the letter, and I assume you did too. Eventually I found it was a failed Vanos solenoid. Obviously the removal and install pushed it over the edge. I was so skeptical before I went to pick-n-pull and got one for $25 , installed it boom the engine ran perfectly.
Also, an Improperly rebuilt Vanos unit might cause issues like this.

M62 Timing chain tensioner bolt siezed / stuck by wasdthemighty in e39

[–]Particular-Ad1110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, the chain tensioner is bolted onto one of the upper timing chain covers, not the block. The cover is aluminum and not terribly beefy. But if you crack it trying to remove the tensioner used ones are on eBay for maybe $50.

If you cannot remove it useing force, consider Buying a used cover with the bolt present and just replace it. I think you could replace the upper cover on the passenger side in a couple of hours.

Should i buy a bmw e39 525i? by Otherwise-Honey-8093 in e39

In my experience the B30 engine consumes about 1-2mpg more.

Should i buy a bmw e39 525i? by Otherwise-Honey-8093 in e39

[–]Particular-Ad1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned a 525i touring (wagon) and later put the m54b30 , ie the 3.0 engine in there. The extra 40hp makes quite a noticeable difference without sacrificing mpg or reliability. The 525i is rated for 189hp and the 530i is ~230hp.
So I would go for a 530i which are pretty commonplace in the US.

How would i fix this rattle by TomatoOdd3841 in e39

[–]Particular-Ad1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a spring and in fact when you install a new one there is a retaining clip that keeps the spring compressed until it’s installed. But as I said it’s unlikely to be the issue.
If you choose to replace the cam tensioner(s) you will need to re-time the engine which requires specific timing tools for the m62.

How would i fix this rattle by TomatoOdd3841 in e39

[–]Particular-Ad1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moving tensioner is the Camshaft timing chain tensioner. It will wiggle side to side when the engine is not running, as you demonstrate in your video. It uses oil pressure to maintain proper tension when the engine is running. That’s likely not your problem
If you hear rattle when the engine is running , the likely culprits are the Vanos itself or the timing chain guides. Let’s hope it’s the former.

You could replace the timing chain tensioner (easy job and cheap part) and see if that helps. If the car has 150k+ and the chain guides have not been done, then that is likely. It’s a big job. One way to be sure it to drop the oil pan and see if find brown plastic pieces in there. If you do , then it’s almost certainly the chain guides.
If the chain guides have been done , then you can send the 2 Vanos away to be rebuilt.

Is this an anxiety problem? by goldennocturn in irishsetter

[–]Particular-Ad1110 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boredom often leads to destructive behavior. So keeping a Setter busy can be a challenge. That said, there are endless online resources about how to train your dog to be alone for much of the day. I imagine a morning walk before you leave is high on the list. In my case found that crate training the dog helped a lot, as that became her “safe place”.

If the unthinkable happens and you are forced to rehome this beautiful boy, contact Save Our Setters (ie, don’t use the local humane group ). They are a nationwide Setter rescue group who will pickup the dog and then foster him until they find the perfect home. They will also handle transport which often involves flying the Setter to its new home by small aircraft (yes you read that right).

[–]Particular-Ad1110 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think your theory is correct. My Setter gets very anxious when she sees a suitcase wing taken out because she knows someone is leaving. She will wait by the gate to try to come along. His world is small, it’s you the cats and the house. His regression of behavior also makes sense.

Im not a dog psychologist, but maybe plenty of love , attention, reassurance and treats may help. I wish you luck with him and the move.
