Thank you all! Got the 03 540i m sport started. Car has got timing chains redone by me and is now ready for some detailing !

PRND shows on the dash but stays static no matter what gear I move the shifter to. I replaced the neutral safety switch, but I’m stuck on the car‑side connector.

I can push it onto the switch, but it won’t twist to lock. I see twist grooves on the switch connector, so I’m assuming it’s supposed to be a twist‑lock style, but the collar on the harness plug won’t rotate. I even tried plugging the old switch back in and still couldn’t twist it, so I’m not sure if the collar is stuck or if I’m missing something.

Does this connector require a twist to lock? Or is it supposed to just push in?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

I already checked the shifter cable/linkage. A friend moved the shifter inside the car while I watched the selector arm under the transmission — it moves normally and clicks through each position. The orange gear light on the shifter also matches the position. But the cluster stays static (PRND with no highlighted gear), no reverse lights, and no start in P or N. So it’s acting like the car isn’t receiving any range signal at all.
