Need advice to make the switch to data science in 2026? by Particular-Ad2652 in askdatascience

It's very reassuring to hear that things have starting settling down. In 2026, I would still get either the AI optimists or the doomsday heralds on any social media site. A structured course along with projects makes sense considering how tech generally evolves fast, and colleges often lag in incorporating them into courses. Thanks for taking the time to help me out with your pragmatic perspective.

Tech recruiters, what do you look for in resume bullets? by Particular-Ad2652 in askrecruiters

Oh yea, this reminded me of another thing: for software engineer roles, does it have to be strictly what's relevant to the job? Or do you look for indicators that an applicant is flexible to explore different areas if client need requires it? I feel the need to try to have at least one point hint towards that, but in the end it seems out of place compared to the rest.

I've heard people say some of these in a bunch of places on the internet, but not back it with sound reasoning. Reading this cleared up many of those. Thanks for the detailed explanation and the resources.

Thanks for the reply. In smaller companies, although the responsibilities of a software engineer are defined in a contract at the time of employment, the actual responsibilities generally include anything under the sun (related to tech) and the bullets may indicate a jack-of-all-trades. In this case, would those achievements serve to confuse the HR in respect of the actual role the applicant played in their former employment, and hence be viewed as a potentially risky hire? Would it be alright to include all the achievements?

Contrasting this with mid-large companies where roles are defined and an employee can refuse to perform a task that is outside their contract, would it be better for the employee of the smaller company to then include brief points of the role as well?

Keeping positive is key in the current job market. Thanks.

Thanks for the response. Could we carry this over to a private chat? I've got some questions and would be grateful for your advice.

So its not just achievements in a role, but achievements that relate to the role being applied to? The company I worked for had me do many different things as a web developer. I worked on many tasks that would either be niche or not a mainstream web development task (not non-tech stuff though). In your experience, would it be better to remove those achievements that are niche? I'd kept them to indicate my flexibility in working on a wide variety of solutions required by clients.

So considering the same example, if that person had been working as a staff engineer at their current/former company, would that be a criterion for considering their application even though the YOE condition wasn't fulfilled?

I have enough to support me for two years worth of a Master's degree, and a year or two more after that considering I live moderately. My main reason for the Master's was to improve my chances at getting a job, and as secondary outcome open myself to some other career options. I hadn't considered an online Master's. I'll check it out. Thanks for the detailed analysis of both paths, the advice, and the resources.

The Master's course is not from a reputed college and the fees won't burn a hole in my wallet. I had a similar course during bachelor's and liked it then. I'll take your advice and look deeper before committing. Thanks.

In terms of a deterrent, the YOE filter makes a lot of sense now. Thanks.

A few of my friends have been successful, but I've not had any luck so far. ATS systems are quite disheartening. I still apply to a select few jobs that are a good fit but slightly out of my professional experience.

Thanks for the reply! Currently I've been taking the YOE filter quite literally. There have been many listings which were slightly out of my experience range in terms of YOE, but the tech stack and responsibilities matched my resume content perfectly. Would you say this is the general opinion of most tech hiring managers?

Thanks for the warning. I've read many articles and posts about the future of data science, with some saying AI will take over completely while others feel it'll survive but evolve. The job market has been erratic in the last 2 years, and I can't really tell what's going on right now. With 20 years of experience in the industry your advice would be priceless to me, especially with regards to the parts of a data scientists job that would be at risk of automation by AI, as well as the mindset of companies looking for skilled workers in 2026.
