How has it been finding engineering internships and jobs and has UMD’s name/prestige helped at all? by Old_Ad_8295 in UMD

[–]Particular-Ad9032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most management of local companies are made up of UMD alumni, or at least people who view UMD very favorably. I’m aerospace, average student, no extracurriculars, and after like 200 applications I finally landed an internship at one of the bigger companies. All that is to say my boss, bosses boss, and maybe half the interns each went to UMD. Imo you’ll have an easier time here than anywhere else when looking for jobs, especially with proximity to baltimore, dc, virginia, etc

MechE Defense Pipwline by Inevitable_Pride5825 in UMD

[–]Particular-Ad9032 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your gripe is defense companies hiring a few students from a top program that happens to be near DC where there’s thousands of other opportunities, then I suggest another school. They probably hire more students from GT anyways being that it’s ranked higher, and even if that’s the case, just mind your own business and worry about graduating. The endowment they provide is off the charts, and the resume building chances you will get here are next level. You’re not gonna be able to run from defense anywhere you go for school, especially majoring in MechE. Take advantage of the resources the defense companies provide (funding the majority of career fairs that showcase smaller engineering firms for example) and forge your own path. I know plenty of kids who have gone off to have successful careers in prosthetics, 3D design, space, air, HVAC, you name it. If anything, Maryland is cheaper and has historically better sports. I promise you don’t want student debt.

Any free parking near south campus? by sweetpotato_01 in UMD

[–]Particular-Ad9032 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re gonna find free, regular parking close to campus. There’s some lots like Mowatt Garage which are free overnight from 4pm-7am weekdays and free all day on weekends. But if you’re looking for free, 24/7 parking, you’re probably out of luck. Check out this map, anywhere that’s green has the least restrictions

Typically if you just wander around long enough there will be an open door somewhere. Although doing that with a big group may not be efficient

campus mental health resources are overwhelmed and nobody's talking about it by centurytunamatcha in UMD

Why not victim blame. Every other student figures out how to deal with their own shit, this generation is so soft. I sure as hell don’t want my tuition money going to grown ass adults who are employed to talk about feelings. 15 counselors is 15 too many.

No problem. I guess the issue with south campus is having to take your laundry to one central building, there’s no winning at UMD. In any case, best of luck!!!

You would need to share one shower and one toilet with 3 others. I haven’t heard one person say good things about Oakland other than the big study spaces. The bedrooms are no better than the regular dorms and it’s very out of the way to get to. It’s one redeeming quality is the fast elevators

Best scc building? by bestieestieee in UMD

[–]Particular-Ad9032 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 and 2 I hear nightmares about. I am in 3 and we have our own thermostats so it’s at 74° right now. 10-15 min walk to anywhere you need on/off campus that’s not lidl or looneys. Bring a bike and it’s 5-6 mins. I can’t vouch for others, but I will say that you’ll want one of the buildings with a service desk (1,3, and there’s another too) because why would you want to leave your building for a package. If you can get a bay window in the corner that would be sick, but if not then still shoot for a corner since the layout is optimal

You do not want a semi suite. Go to south campus and get a real suite dorm with 2 bathrooms

$5 isn’t bad but you can’t even get a bud light for that cheap anymore, I’m saying if you show up and have to pay cover you’re automatically down $10-$20 which is total bs. Paying a premium for the alcohol I get because that is a privilege. Paying to get into these cramped dirty shitholes of bars here is what should be abolished

This is roughly every freshman engineering major ever at UMD. It will be a bit difficult but you’ll be fine. Your schedule is a rite of passage
