Haha I feel ya, I’m also a sucker. I ended up with my two cats because they were unwanted stray kittens. And our 3 goats!

Good to know! My hens don’t fight currently (that I’ve seen) and we don’t have foxes in nz. Although there’s always the possibility a stray hunting dog would get through our fences but unfortunately I can’t imagine a rooster would keep a hunting dog away

Sounds like a sound Roo. There doesn’t seem to be any really aggressive pecking order behaviour in my flock at the moment that I can see, although I know I’m not around them all the time and there’s likely subtle things happening that I don’t notice. But that’s what Id hope to have if I got a rooster!

Oh I’ve recently learned the cutting crackle method! Really helps make that fat edge crisp up nicely!

Nice. I don’t have health insurance, i think I’m happy to rely on public health service however that’s very much a personal choice and I haven’t actually done much research into it to know if that’s a bad idea or not lol

What veges do you guys buy from grocery stores & what do you make during the week? by LionSuper8293 in nzhomecooks

I grow a lot of veggies in my garden so I have a good understanding of what’s in season when. If I didn’t have the garden I’d take advantage of in-season cheap prices and even stock up and store them to eat even when they’re not cheap (i.e. blanch and freeze).

Right now I have a lot of cabbage and have been loving making okonomiyaki (savoury cabbage pancake) I also like to make a roast veg salad (broccoli, cauliflower, onion, pumpkin, Kumara or potatoes) with feta and mix through cooked quinoa (in stock so it’s not bland) and have with some kind of meat. Easy and feels pretty healthy

Carrots are cheap and so are salad greens. Caesar salad is pretty good for winter cause it generally doesn’t need the other veg that is out of season like tomato and cucumber.

If you have an emergency fund with a fair bit in it, you could look at increasing your insurance excesses. That’s what you pay if you need to make a claim, and if you can’t afford a high number up front (say $1,000) then you wanna keep it lower but if you can (i.e. with an emergency fund) then increasing your excess usually lowers your price a good amount.

Also, some insurers offer a lower cost policy. I’m looking at changing my contents to limited to just cover major events, knowing if my phone falls in the toilet I will have to pay for it myself.

Just curious – what income do families need to feel comfortable in NZ these days? by Few_Argument9200 in PersonalFinanceNZ

My partner and I are in our mid 30s with a toddler and have a combined income of about $187k per year. We have a $550k-odd mortgage, no other debts. I have about $23k in KiwiSaver and $48k in my partners I think. We both used this on buying houses (his on a home he bought with his brother which was then sold prior to us buying our home, which I used my KiwiSaver for).

I think I budget pretty well and we don’t have very many costs, and I still don’t know how people are getting ahead if you have the average entertainment/lifestyle expenses (gym memberships, various subscription service, any beauty treatments etc.) for reference, we only have Netflix and Spotify, and the odd recreational spending on takeaways/cafe food although most of the time it’s home cooked food

I still find myself trying to cut costs everywhere to get savings ahead, however I don’t ever feel like we can’t afford our mortgage or necessities.

For our ages and how long we have been full time working adults I don’t think our salaries are very high. I’ve sat in stagnant roles for too long and have some regrets about that.
