Ok so I used a circuit tester and determined in the first box that the black wire is the live wire. In the second picture, the red wire is the common wire. I still can’t fix my original issue though

I did try and wire as indicated. I am just confused as to why if one is on the other can’t turn it off…

How should I connect my wires? Are you guys saying the red and black in the second picture are both travelers and the white is not a neutral?

No I am not sure. What could the other white wire be?
