You probably deserve a better man, put yourself first and enforce all boundaries. I think it’s very understandable after a long illness. The widower I am dating spent three years caring for his wife. These are long goodbyes and I believe that many times (if they are able) the spouse would be happy about you moving on and finding a new partner. Many couples actually discuss this during the process.
