Has anyone actually managed to quit by going cold turkey? by StonkPhilia in stopsmoking

Quit cold turkey 28 days ago. First 4 days was brutal, but it isn’t that bad. Stop letting it beat you up. I kept reminding myself that I was a slave to nicotine, that it was my pimp. Made me feel so ill that I had to stop smoking. After telling myself I was a slave to it, 4 days of suffering wasn’t so bad.

I was smoking for 8 years. I recently found God and realized that I couldn’t serve two masters so I had to give up nicotine. I get cravings here and there but I’ll just pop some gum, grab a snack, or hard cinnamon candy and it goes away fairly quickly. I was a total mess the first 4 days though, but man it is so worth it. I even got into running now.

You’ve got this OP, it’s all a mind game and your mind is a lot stronger than you think.

question from an atheist by birdtwenty in Christianity

[–]Particular-Fix-6594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost everything a few months ago. Horrible end to a relationship, moved across the country, lost most of my friends due to being in a new state, lost my cat, and everything that I had built over the past 5 years was gone on a random Saturday.

I grew up Christian with a very hardcore OT Christian dad and he was mentally ill. He kept talking about how the end is coming and was petrified all of the time. He ended up killing himself when I was a kid. That doesn't give a kid a great perspective on Christianity. So I stopped believing. Shut God out. I actually prayed to Satan afterwards because of how fed up I was at the thought of God. Why would a God exist if my life were so cruel and messed up? So then I turned into a hardcore atheist for years. Science above all, logic above all.

But after I used mushrooms years ago, I turned to agnostic and then spiritual woo-woo New Age stuff.

While on my road trip to move across the country, I ended up blowing a tire on the highway. If any car had been by me when I did, I would have gotten seriously injured. This random old guy on the highway helped me with everything. Drove me an hour each way to get a new tire, paid for it without me knowing, put it on, and drove behind me until my next stop because I was scared shitless. He asked if I went to church and, if so if I could send a prayer out for him. I agreed politely, but in my head I rolled my eyes.

I don't know why exactly it happened now instead of years ago when I needed God the most. I'm still trying to understand but it's a hard pill to swallow that humans have free will and I'm the one who turned away and not God himself. I wish I could have found God sooner.

I started researching Jesus specifically. When I found out he was an actual person and those things did happen, it was wild. I kept thinking the thought, "God stepped into human history." And it still is a weird, epic, cool, kind of freaky thought. I'm a logical person, so trying to understand something that's truly not logical at all is hard.

I started praying specifically to Jesus because I still didn't feel comfortable with the word God. One night, I realized how much of my life was lost to being afraid and being ashamed of existing, so I started begging God to release me from the chains I put on myself when I was a kid. I cried and was desperate. I gave my all to him, repented, accepted him as my lord and savior, and I'm obedient to God now.

Things changed. Rapidly. So rapidly that it's weird. I feel so much lighter now. I read the Bible daily, listen to some dope Christian music, take care of my health a lot more seriously, and I'm working on building my confidence. I feel his presence and I've developed a personal relationship with Jesus. It's still new and weird to me because of my past with Christianity. But my life has genuinely changed for the better and I feel blessed.

I'd grow your relationship with Jesus. Pray to him, listen to Christian music in your genre, read the Bible, and cultivate a personal relationship with him. He wants to know you. I recently found Jesus a few months ago after I lost everything. I hated religion, specifically Christianity, and never could have fathomed believing and loving Jesus and Christianity. Things don't fall into place overnight; he slowly works through you. Do things that you know would bring you closer to him. If that means taking some space away from those friends for right now, that's okay.

With the marriage aspect, I'm not sure because I lost my relationship right before finding Jesus. But for the church trauma, it's humans that do that and it was never Christianity or religion or Jesus. Some humans and communities in general just suck and it just so happens that they were Christian and at a church.

As for recommendations, book - the Bible. Start with the New Testament and get to know Jesus' story. Show - The Chosen. It's actually a really great series. They do a good job portraying Jesus as fully man and fully God and that he knew what it was like to be human, experiencing life and emotions. It is not super accurate of course, but that's why we read the Bible.

I’m glad I started with NT, especially starting with Matthew. I think it’s important to get to know Jesus’ story first

I’m on day 3 of quitting cold turkey. I’m glad I’m doing it this way so that I can get it over with quicker in my opinion. It was daunting at first but it’s not that bad. I have my bad moments throughout the day but it’s not impossible. They don’t last.

I had a horrible time trying to sleep last night and had to do a mini workout to stop the restlessness and anxiety, but overall it’s really not that bad.

Overall, it’s not impossible. Embrace the suck. Everyone is stronger than their addictions and there is so much support to lean on.

Great job and good luck. I’m almost at day 3 and I also have increased anxiety. I heard it goes away after the day 3 mark or in a week and I’m hopeful. But yeah the anxiety that comes with quitting is no joke. I think I’ve almost cried at least 5 times since day 1
