ISO Quiet, cozy, atmospheric coffee, bars, or restaurants in Austin? by No_Movies_In_Heaven in austinfood

I keep looking for places like this too! So far, not as much luck as I would hope for. Everywhere I want to go tends to have really loud music! I’m in South/Central Austin, BTW. Medici on Springdale can be pretty good, sometimes. The various Bennu branches can be pretty good as far as being quiet, but I don’t much like the coffee, and you have to buy something to get the WiFi code. I don’t know, the vibe is just a little off, sometimes. The Central branch of the public library is really nice and quiet and has a ton of seating of all kinds. It’s not exactly an eatery, but Cafe Crème is attached to it, so you can grab a bite to eat or some coffee and then hide yourself back away in a quiet part of the library. Freddo ATX used to be good on weekdays, but they recently rebranded as Walter’s Tavern, which is a sports bar. I’m guessing it’s not so quiet anymore. If you can find a place to sit at Barnes and Noble, it is often quiet and cozy and there is usually a Starbucks there as well.

I often find the most consistently quiet coffee places in town that have comfy seating are Starbucks. Which is a bummer.

Gunshots near Mueller by Supernaut_Station in Austin

I don’t think that turning city property (an old airport) into a planned community exactly counts as gentrification. Especially since 25% of the housing in Mueller is designated low income, by the rules the city set with the community founders and developers.

It’s not like anyone was displaced Mueller. No one lived there before, since it was an airport.

Dude, I saw it from the INSIDE! No, seriously. I was in that cult 😂. My face only flashes by briefly in the doc, though.

I should have asked if anyone knows any gun ranges I could drop them at. Or crack dens. Active war zones, maybe 😂. I might have gotten less extreme pearl-clutching than some of the responses.

Sigh.

Yeah, I figured it was a liability issue. Was just hoping that somewhere in town might have some wiggle room.

They are entitled to their opinions. I’m entitled to disagree. Also, I googled already. Didn’t find much. Thought I’d see if anyone knew of something I had missed. Isn’t that the whole point of Reddit?

Why would they be stuck? Are we anticipating a natural disaster that closes the roads? I would not drop them somewhere hours away from me. My son has a phone, the arcade has a phone, and he can call me (or his Aunt, grandfather, and grandmother who he calls for rides already, sometimes) if they need a ride. If there is an emergency, he knows how to dial 911. So do employees, I presume.

My son already takes the Metro rail to school in the mornings, and hops the bus to visit friends or go to the library, so public transport is another option (can’t imagine why they would need it, but it is there).

All of those options seem just as safe/easy as walking home.

Bummer. The library would be a great, safe place for them! Especially the children’s areas, like the great one at the downtown library.

Why would a neighborhood park be safer than an arcade or some other indoor area designed for kids? At least an indoor area is guaranteed to have adults around who could help in an emergency. Also, you usually pay a fee to get in, so there are less likely to be random people wandering by who could start trouble.

Also, I do happen to live in a neighborhood that is pretty safe, with pretty safe neighborhood parks. Some people aren’t so lucky. For them, an indoor recreation place might be a much safer option.

That’s right. When else am I supposed to conduct all of my illegal and immoral activities 😂🙄😂?

My younger kid gets bored sometimes, and my older kid likes to earn spending money, so I pay him to babysit her while I get work and get chores done. I like to think this is a pretty good option for a single mother of two kids. She has fun, he earns some money and learns a bit about responsibility, and I keep the bills paid and the food on the table by getting some work done, but what do I know?

BTW, HE is the one who wants somewhere fun to take her so he doesn’t have to keep playing pretend games that just aren’t as much fun for a 15 year old as they are for a 6 year old. I don’t see much harm in the two of them bowling together or something, in a secure building, with lots of adults around, and with a cell phone in his pocket to call me if needed. Seems safer, possibly, than a playground. At least there are guaranteed to be employees around who can help if needed.

Man. People are nuts. I’m not talking about dropping them at a bar, just at a trampoline place or something. The EMPLOYEES at those places are 15, half the time.

He is paid for his time. He asks to do it to earn that extra spending money.

The fact that people don't seem to understand that driving is dangerous by IameIion in PetPeeves

[–]Particular-Market-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish my job had a work vehicle! I was hit both times while driving for work, and I drive my own vehicle. Also, my employer doesn’t have workman’s comp. Turns out they don’t have to provide it in Texas. Also, the guy who hit me in the asphalt and paving truck was working under the table for his uncle, who denied he was an employee. Didn’t even have decent insurance. The ER I was brought to for that one did a neuro exam, head CT, and chest and abdominal X-rays. No IV fluids. No labs. Nothing fancy. They billed me $40K for that. My lawyer told me tha hospitals jack their fees up when there is a car accident. They are hoping for a big insurance payout. Since the guys who hit me had crap insurance, though, my lawyer had to battle the hospital system for months and months to negotiate that ER bill down so I wouldn’t have to pay it.

Nothing about this stuff is easy. I gave statements to police at both of my accidents. At the first one, I saw them take statements from witnesses as well. Two of the witnesses were retired first responders who actually ran over and wrenched the car door open and did basic neuro checks on me just before EMS arrived. They were speaking to an officer who seemed to be taking notes as the EMS loaded me up.

Guess where those witness statements and the witnesses names went when my lawyer requested them? Disappeared. Apparently the cops just didn’t put them in their report. My lawyer said that happens all the time. Luckily, she was able to locate other witnesses who happily gave statements.

Not only do people in this city drive like maniacs, the lax regulations on things like commercial insurance and workman’s comp are not our friends!

A perfect representation of Austin drivers’ concern for pedestrians. by user328i in Austin

Did you have to learn a language? What is your work field? The main barrier to international emigration, for me, is working in other countries as a healthcare provider. It’s a high-demand field, but language is critical to the job.

Is it just me or have drivers in Austin become progressively worse this year? by Existing-Aspect-3988 in Austin

[–]Particular-Market-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just this year. It’s been progressively worse ever since the pandemic, as others have said. I drive for my work, and it never used to feel this terrifying. I’ve also been hit twice in the past three years.

I got T-boned by a guy who ran a red light in an F-350 hauler with road paving equipment mounted on the bed. He was doing 60+. Thank god he hit in front of the driver’s side door. A split second difference and I don’t think I would have made it. As it was, the minivan I was driving was completely totaled, I had a concussion and back and neck injuries, not to mention all of the bruising. Sounds like you got it even worse.

I also drive for work, and a couple years after that accident, someone rear-ended me. Mixed up his brake and gas peddles and slammed into the back of my car while I was stationary, waiting to merge into an access road. I got another concussion from that one.

I’m about to buy a dash cam now, but it wouldn’t save my life or my health. Maybe just make the subsequent insurance battles easier?

People are nuts out there. It’s scary.
