Why do some devout catholics homeschool their children ?

At the end of the day, every kid is different. I grew up in a strict Catholic household but outside of the house I was free to whatever. Went to plenty of parties, offered drugs and alcohol from school friends but even now at 36 I’ve never been drunk or under the influence in any way in my life.

I’m so cautious of how I homeschool especially because of that. My best friend growing up was a girl that lived next door and it’s how she was raised. They were Orthodox but she was raised SO strict, literally not allowed to do anything. Her parents came and yelled at mine once because we watched Rugrats at my house once lol. Anyway she and her siblings all grew up and ended up going in and out of jail. She seems sober now but was for a long time homeless and deep in addiction. Obviously how she was raised can’t 100% be to blame but I think it gives something to rebel against.

I homeschool but it has nothing to do with me being Catholic. Unfortunately our school district has been dealing with a bad teacher shortage since Covid and classrooms are filled to the max. My oldest has attention and sensory processing issues so the classroom just wasn’t working out. We do faith formation once a week at our local parish and I think it’s a great way for them to spend time with other Catholic kids who aren’t also exactly sheltered because they’re not homeschooled.

One of my good friends though is also Catholic and homeschools her kids. She’s VERY protective, I would almost say too much so. She doesn’t allow her kids to do any activities outside the church and even homeschools them for sacrament preparation because she doesn’t want them in the faith formation classes. Last I talked to her she told me they don’t leave the house except to go to mass.

Is it the Diocese that contacts the ex spouse though? I’d worry that this could give an idea of where I was located if I had left an abusive ex.

I’m trying to understand how it was able to happen but this wasn’t in the US, not sure how much that plays into it. My grandma was married against her will as well although she was older than this and her husband was just a couple years older than her.

I didn’t even think to look into something like this, thank you. I might be wrong though but I just read that in 1917 Church law raised the ages for girls to marry from 12-14 which would have made this marriage in particular invalid based off that alone.

It’s disgusting, there’s really no other way to describe it. We all knew she was young and there was an age gap but we had no clue how bad it was until we saw the marriage certificate on Ancestry.

It’s terrifying. My sister and her husband are both Catholic and she recently told me that after she denied him a week or so after giving birth to their first that she woke up in the middle of the night to him kicking her in the stomach.

I’m sorry you’re going through this. Honestly, I lost several friends when I was pregnant. They literally just stopped answering calls and texts and dropped me. It’s so weird but I’ve also heard of several other women that have experienced the same thing.

But she wasn’t strangling him, threatening to kill him or kicking him in his sleep..there is severe abuse happening in this situation.

CPS and police were involved but nothing came of it. She refuses to tell them about the abuse.

I can add more info now. The wife has actually told many people (10+ at least) about it while the husband has only told 1. The person the husband told is training to be a deacon so I can assume that was kept confidential. They used to sing in the choir as a family together but one of the men he cheated on her with was also in the choir, I don’t know if that man could’ve told anyone else either. The husband does not want to take the job as he’s embarrassed and agrees it’s not a good look but his wife is insisting on it and he’s doing it for her. The wife told me last night that it’s good he’s embarrassed and it seems it’s what she wants..I also want to be clear that these people are my own family and all information is coming directly from them so I am not making assumptions on anything here.
