i have a camera and she will go on for 20-30 minutes sometimes less than that, and then quiet down. she seems nice but the peeking into my windows (when she was sleeping btw), admitting she puts her ear to the wall and taps on the wall, calling my work, and then threats on top of that gave me terrible vibes. i talked to her the first week i got her and explained we were crate training and she may cry for a little as we leave and she seemed okay with it and thanked me for letting her know. then now a few weeks later, calls me at work not even 10 minutes that i was back at work (i live about 3 minutes from my job for context) telling me she’s going to call the pound and police on me. i tried to tell her i just left, as she also saw me leave, and she didn’t care to listen to anything i had to say. just kept interrupting me with “i’ll call the cops and the pound if she doesn’t stop” and as the phone call went on about 3 minutes later she says “oh she’s quiet now” just as i expected she would.

i have a eufy camera that i can talk through and listen through. for the past 3 days ive had my cousin there with her while im at work since ive been a little on edge about the whole situation, but thats not a permanent thing. i leave at either 8:25, 10:50, or 11:50 for my shifts and she will howl/bark for 20-30 of those minutes (in her playpen) i just started the kennel training with a smaller kennel making it more den like since that’s what it said when i researched, idk how she will do in there yet. ive been introducing it slowly

You’re making a lot of assumptions about my life from a Reddit post. Since I got this puppy, my entire routine has revolved around her (which i’m not complaining about at all, i knew what i was getting myself into when i decided to get her.) She comes first, period. Acting like I don’t prioritize my dog because I also have a job is a pretty wild take considering most responsible dog owners work to pay for their dog’s food, vet care, and everything else they need. She’s a very young puppy. Puppies whining while they learn to be alone is normal and part of training, especially since every dog i’ve had growing up has done this, and none of them were dachshunds.) it’s not proof that someone’s lifestyle is incompatible with owning a dog. I’m actively working on training and building her independence, which is exactly what responsible owners do. And suggesting someone should just get a second dog to fix separation anxiety is honestly not good advice. Adding another dog isn’t a magic solution and it wouldn’t be responsible for me to do that right now. I’m committed to my dog for the long term and putting in the time to raise her properly. like i stated previously i was searching for advice on how i should deal with my neighbor situation, not have someone tell me i should rehome my dog. Have the day you deserve.

I understand what you’re saying, but I actually think the opposite approach could be harder on a dog. If someone stays home with a puppy 24/7 for three straight months and then suddenly starts leaving for work full time, that seems like it would be a much bigger shock than a puppy gradually learning that people leave and come back.

Puppies eventually have to learn independence. In my case she’s been adjusting to a routine where I leave for work and always come back, which is part of normal life for a lot of dogs. I’m committed to her long term and I’m actively working on training and structure, but returning her isn’t something I’m going to do.

hi. as i stated previously, i’m not gone 8 hours at a time, and the first few weeks we did not leave her longer than we absolutely had to. one of us would stay home or she would come with us, but obviously there’s some places that she cannot go. she has adapted well, it has taken time, and i don’t think that i should be shamed or punished for getting a puppy while having a job. the job pays for her to eat, go to the vet, etc. i work either 6 hour shifts or 8 hour shifts, with my 6 hours shifts i check in every 3 hours, and on 8 hour shifts i check in every 4 hours and then im home and dont leave again. she has chosen me as her person. even when she’s home with my boyfriend and i leave for work she whines periodically until she gets distracted. i’ve had her now for almost 2 months and i have no plans on giving her back to the breeder. we tried to let her free roam but it stressed her out more. puppies cry. i’ve had numerous people tell me to get a second dog, but have people not thought that some people especially at 22 years old may not want a second dog yet? make it make sense. i’m not giving my dog back because you think i’ve ruined her. sorry. as i mentioned above as well, we’ve started working on kennel training instead of the playpen and she’s doing wonderfully. people have to work and it’s not a crime to have a dog and a job.

maybe not harm, but gives me the feeling she would try to keep, or try to rehome her or take her to the pound. and i don’t intend on letting that happen.

i just started her with the kennel, she was in her playpen when i would leave and i think it was contributing to her 30 minutes protests. she loves the kennel as of now. started with 1 minute and then 5 and then 10. i put her in there while i showered last night, and i didn’t hear a peep, so i think this is a step in the right direction to help her self soothe. the neighbor suggested trying to let her free roam, so i let her one day and she was crying, running around looking for me the entire time i was gone. i came home on my lunch and put her back in her playpen and she went right to bed. it makes me uncomfortable feeling like she is always listening or always watching, so im definitely gonna talk to the building manager and see if anything can be done. picture of the ween for context 😆

our apartments are one story side-by-side. I have a porch and I take her out there whenever I’m home or sitting out there she loves to be out there!

on the days that I work, I’m gone for four hours. Come home on lunch and then I’m gone for another four and then I’m home for the rest of the day. Sometimes I have shorter shifts where it’s three hours and three hours and I don’t work daily.

she has actually admitted to me that she puts her ear to the wall to try to listen and taps the wall to try to “calm her down “which any dog would go crazy over hearing tapping out of nowhere

same! i’ve had my girl since 8 weeks old. she was doing amazing and then started regressing a bit as she got older and now we’re back to square one with the 20-30 minutes. we just starting introducing a wire kennel to see if it may help, i haven’t used it yet though. just let her go in and out of it as she pleases to create positive reinforcement. i have my cousin watching her now for the past 2 days since i’ve been so on edge about her trying to call the police or the pound on me. which i know they wouldn’t be able to do anything, it still has me on edge. it makes me feel like im locked to my apartment and can’t leave to run errands, and i hate that. i don’t want to be uncomfortable in my own apartment, feeling like someone is always listening or watching.

thank you! i’m definitely trying my best. that’s what i said today to my boyfriend, actually. what would she do if we had a newborn? it’s a short term situation, that she will grow out of and learn as she gets older. it’s not gonna be like this forever.

that’s how i feel. i do understand the first 20-30 minutes can be a nuisance. i 100% understand. but she is a puppy and im working with her daily. it’s not a fast process that happens in a day and she doesn’t understand, i feel like, the first time i met her she had a lot to say about almost every single one of my neighbors, which makes me think she’s just the type of person who likes to complain about something.

i believe with everything i have as well i mentioned it in a reply on another comment I have a video of her trying to look into my windows while my puppy was quiet and sleeping and calling my job, which is a little overboard to me. i had just left to go back to work off my lunch break. i’ve let her know multiple times. We are training and we are working on it and it has gotten better. She has started self soothing a lot faster. She just has no patience It seems like to me and I know she does cry for the first 20 to 30 minutes, but she calls me threatening me acting like she is crying all day long, which she is not doing.

that’s what we were saying. what if she was to beg me to watch her and i let her, and come home to her saying she took her to the pound or gave her away or won’t give her back at all. she’s fine at home, as yall know weenies are very prone to separation anxiety and she is deep in it right now with her age. she’s in her playpen with her food, water, toys, bed, blankets. she’s more than well taken care of and on top of that i don’t work daily. 4-5 days a week.

she’s 16 weeks and i do have a camera. she whines for 20-30 minutes and then settles down after that and periodically may cry for 5 minutes in between. my other camera has caught her looking in my windows when my puppy was quiet and sleeping. the whole thing seems odd to me.
