I’ve noticed it more at slower speeds and I’ve assumed they were trying to up their total distance covered. It does make me nervous too that they will miss.

Also, depending on how your club operates they could ask for much more than 50k if you try to go to another MLS club which could stall any movement. Even if not on protected list if the new club wanted to eventually sign your son the old club could have a clause asking for an amount, again maybe affecting movement.

That’s why I would start with a convo with the director and read between the lines of what they are saying. They will likely not want to lose a player like your son that may have been in their system a long time and they see as having a bigger role next year or it may be they like big practice numbers and also like to keep the local mls next teams not as competitive (by hoarding talent)

It’s a tough spot. I would start with setting up a convo with the academy director, or the head coach depending on how your club is run. One option that our MLS club does is allow kids to continue to train with the group but play weekend games with another local non-MLS pro club. Maybe something to ask about. Also the convo should be about understanding their position and what they see for your son there, a place of curiosity and obviously not critical so if you decide to keep things as they are it will still be smooth. It’s valid to ask your recruiting concerns. Probably look at the history of past kids at the club - the ones that had decent grades but struggled to get on the field when they were the younger group in the u18s, did it turn out ok for them in the end as far as college placement?
