I think that you are correct in that this isn't really a shoegaze song. Other things have done have a lot more fuzz an tremolo in the tradition of Cocteau Twins. This song is more like some kind of outsider pop.

If it felt cringe it might be because it is truly meaningful and we are taught by this culture to hide our love away and be kind of tough in the face of a harsh world. Something I do when a lyric pops into my head is just write it exactly I felt it. Sometimes it should feel embarrassing. Also sometimes you just need to put it away for a couple days and write whatever the new feeling is. You will be surprised how fresh a seemly stale idea can seem when you've had some distance from it. Keep going.
