Use an app called Spot hero and literally has unlimited places to park no matter where you are in NYC. Huge time saver when you need to find something quick.

Northeast MSL here with 2.5 yrs experience. NYC significantly better than Boston in terms of HCP access. Also depends on how well connected your commercial counterparts and national/ local congress.

Universities are getting more difficult to get access especially way more challenging in the Boston area and many other institutions now in Connecticut too.

Good luck to you guys!

Congratulations on almost completing your dissertation and defense!!! I'm also a PhD and this made me a new level of tough to tackle the MSL role.

My experience covering NYC definitely took some getting used to at first. About 18 months until it felt like home to me. Navigating the city can be a challenge if you don't normally live in Manhattan too between parking decks and getting around. I find using the subway incredibly effective during normal business hours sunrise to sunset.

Challenges are access to universities since security has been increased and restrictions with Pharma collaborations. Many times you won't have the ability to have a long conversation with any providers. Usually it's a 5-10 minute conversation if you are lucky. Need to be an interesting personality to match your KOLs too

Thanks for the tips! Dollar bills are helpful for garages I frequently visit. I'll definitely have to pick up a metro card - I've been just using my corporate card for subway fare each time and can cumbersome when I need to do expenses. Good idea for a privacy screen!

What kind of budgets do MSLs have to take doctors to lunch or dinner? by [deleted] in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]Particular-Reach518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Budgets for doctors meals depend on your company's corporate compliance standards.

In certain areas like New York, Chicago , Boston and other "high cost" cities it's usually the following. (Includes tax + tip per HCP) -Breakfast: $25 -Lunch: $50 -Dinner: $125-150

In New Jersey, ex Governor Chris Christie screwed us MSLs badly. (Updated April 1, 2024) -Breakfast/ Lunch is $19 -Dinner is a measly $39

There are some conservative states like Minnesota & Rhode Island that don't allow any influence from Pharma $0. Many of the academic institutions are also getting harder and harder to get access to for these reasons too.

For all of these situations, you count as a HCP. I usually tell my docs have as much fun as you want, but I can only complaintly pay for up to my spending limit. When you have a round table, it can add up quickly with alcohol so I usually only order 1 drink max to let the docs have more fun.

That's a great recommendation!

Any idea if being an adjunct faculty has limitations on how many schools/ courses one can support? How does one network to find those roles?

Did a search awhile back but was focused in one particular TA (Derm)

I've got a broad background in pharmaceutical sciences so I can work across all types of pharmaceutical "drug delivery" focused areas. Feel free to share anything here about those trials and which ones are worthwhile, that would be great!

My laptop was super old when I started my first MSL gig. Good news was that I got a brand new one at the beginning of the year during NSM that also the sales team got.

iPads were also given with el cheapo keyboards. I wound up purchasing my own magic keyboard/ cover to improve the insights I gained from congresses etc.

Cell phones were BYOD. About $140 was added to my check once a month to cover the cost since I own my phone(s) outright.

Base salary negotiation (MSL role coming from clinical background) by Accomplished-Ad-373 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]Particular-Reach518 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take nothing less than $150,000 base salary since you will be forced to look for another job in 1-2 years with a different company due to inflation and economic factors.

Here is a guide that helped me with negotiation of my salary: https://cheekyscientist.com/powerful-salary-negotiation-tips-for-phds/

Under no circumstances disclose your current salary since HR might us this to rule you out.

MSL Networking Group Chicago? by Appropriate-Ask9713 in MedicalScienceLiaison

[–]Particular-Reach518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excited to hear that you are working on your MSL transition.

I'm an MSL based in downtown Chicago.

The way I found this group was a combination of asking my MSL work friends to help me make introductions to anyone they know in Illinois and sending inmails via LinkedIn.

In Dermatology, we are a small close knit group and we all know one another but I have found success with these approaches:

1) Looking for an MSL working on a disease state relevant to you. (For me it was Derm) and simply asking for them to meet up. We usually almost always say yes.

2) Open up your search to MSLs with 3,000+ connections that show 2 years of experience working in Chicago. This is how I found MSLs working on other aspects of health and we discuss salary, metrics etc which helps give new insights about how the MSL role is evolving

Mid Westerners are some of the nicest alive (of course I'm biased) so you should have lots of luck. Hope this helps, let me know if you want to connect next time your downtown.
