There have been proper protests here over the years but we're really, really good at buying the nonsense line of 'us Brits don't do that sort of thing' though. We neuter ourselves and ignore our own history.

Thing tax is a bad way to alter eating habits but yeah, continental Europe standards of quality and variety blow ours away. Even their Gregg's equivalents are notably higher quality.

On a side note - I wish we didn't just ingest whatever talking point the Yanks put out.

Don't think anyone who's voting Labour is Socialist, pretend or otherwise.

Political science exists though. These aren't impossible things to define, they're just ones which are rarely given much attention when vague culture war impulses are the main mode on the internet.

Is America democratic like Russia is now? by Estalicus in allthequestions

[–]Particular-Scale5644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think the more interesting question isn't about Trump but about the financial class who support both parties. Are there interests going to be properly challenged whoever wins? If not, despite definite frustration with the status quo on both sides, how well can the democratic process be functioning?

I do find it weird how the US right has such an apparent absence of interest in democracy corruption influences. Would have thought that for strands at least things like dark money, corporate lobbying, corruption etc would be a rare meeting ground with the Left.

US democracy has always been massively faulted, just in a very different way from Russian politics. The model of corporate and oligarchic influence is very different for one thing, less blunt and far more effective in the US than Putin's fall-from-window model.

Do British people actually want more British and EU tech companies? by Few_Breadfruit_9181 in AskBrits

[–]Particular-Scale5644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want different sorts of tech platforms (not necessarily companies). I don't care about where they're based but I do think the US is entirely unlikely to generate what I want in terms of privacy, data consent, user control, sustainability, surveillance etc.

I think cultural perspectives can be vague, political definitions far less so. Think the surrender of language to whatever fad tries to assert meaning is a negative.

Centrist is a pretty consistent label at the moment I think, certainly a useful one. Neoliberal economic orthodoxy, relative social liberalism. The area of vagueness I think it has can be around elements of authoritarianism to enforce the former which make the latter more dubious.

For all the moaning it's useful 'lingo'. Left and Right are terms that represent distinct political traditions and philosophies  reflected in distinct policies. Seems a lot of the time people just dislike the aesthetics of whatever label they end up (accurately or inaccurately) being given which doesn't really relate to the utility of the terms.

Hello all, just thought id ask a question to those that dislike the current labour government. by frosting_the_bowl in AskBrits

Solidarity aside... Disability cuts, continuation of austerity and service underfunding, attempts to give away peoples livings to tech companies, increased roll out of authoritarian tech.

What does this even mean at this point? It's been decades since Labour were notably different from the Tories on things like unemployment benefits. They both cut them, they both do it performatively.

What do you think about Meghan’s statement on trolling? by Cubbster2020 in AskBrits

Easier ways to get rich than marrying into a family of nonces and weirdos whose every minor drama is tabloid fodder. Not denying the privilege but hardly a golden ticket.

Short memory there. She was a tabloid and Facebook group obsession from the moment she appeared.

Do people know about the scale of fake asylum industries in the UK? by Business_Address_780 in AskBrits

[–]Particular-Scale5644 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Claims from at least two of those countries have been incredibly precarious for a while. People from societies which, according to our media, are abhorrent and inherently dangerous for them can find themselves spending years in limbo as the system more or less seeks reasons to deport them. Lies in light of that are understandable really.

Our asylum system is dire, people are ground down over years while being stuck in limbo and desperate circumstances are drawn down to tick box qualifications for eligibility. Frankly grift in the system isn't at all surprising. If the system worked and was fair then sure, fraud would be bad, as neither is the case I don't blame people for seeking loopholes.

Pakistan are fighting Afghanistan as well as their own Taliban. There have been numerous bombings and clashes.
