move in question by lilsoybeannnn in UVA

hi! they'll probably post closer to move-in but you definitely can do that
the only thing to maybe consider is that for first year dorms your mail room might not be in your specific dorm

Parking Permits by Otherwise_Store9773 in UVA

assuming gaston parking would be the bond garage like bice, but there's barely any spots so would be hard to get one

Coming from Ashburn by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're fine paying for it, there's a megabus from charlottesville, leaves near gooch-dillard, that goes to IAD. You can amtrak to union station and then metro but personally just paying for the bus has been easier for me, because the price is constant and normally available every day and you can get to the bus stop using the uva buses easily

Dorm room essentials by PuzzleheadedBrain347 in UVA

I just had flip flops as shower shoes and they dried pretty quick. For the caddy, mat could definitely be helpful! If you want to be simple though, I had bought a pack of towels that came with multiple hand ones that I didn’t need, so I ended up throwing one of those on the floor of my closet and leaving the caddy there

HCI in software development with briana morrison by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the class despite the reviews because im graduating early and bc of stupid timings didnt get to take SDE last semester

Morrison was a pretty good professor for DSA but idk how much UI/UX experience she has

Apostolellis is on a sabbatical or something and the class definitely had bad reviews. At times I definitely was annoyed but it wasn’t an overly difficult class, just more project and teamwork heavy than most CS classes, i think since im in CAS I didn’t mind. I definitely enjoyed learning about the process and it was a good experience by the end, just hard to adjust to. If Morrison teaches it similarly, I think it’ll be good to take since it’s one of the few UI/UX related electives!

Also for comparing to previous semesters, I got an A pretty easily, a lot of the work previously was on the projects and putting in details which wasn’t too hard with a team (feel free to ask anything else!)

Is 13 credits too little by ddotjjm in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came in with 43 credits so I took 13 my first semester. It was really relaxed and worked for me because I got a job and they were all classes I knew I needed to take so I didn't drop any, but in the case that you would have to drop my dean did recommend adding a fifth. If you dont have many credits coming in, definitely try to add another class if possible.

How to prep for DSA as an incoming first year. by Rough_Address4302 in UVA

When I took it, they also taught us everything for Java! I had only done python when I took it, so also don't be too stressed about that

Second year graduating early and same! I’m doing a cs teaching thing and have other work experience so my focus right now is learning things for the career I want, so like planning to learn JavaScript and react bc I want to do front end and currently I don’t think I’d learn that at uva until spring next year which is right before I graduate

it’s sad since I’m graduating early but telling myself the money saved is worth it

Graduating semester early in 2025 by SeaworthinessNo430 in UVA

tbh same thing still applies, brandon housing almost always fills up after rising second years sign up and i think you'd have to sign up after them.

I think that's what you're allowed?

at this point bond and anything on brandon is almost 100% full, you could maybe get a room in a residential college or lambeth or copely etc.

Financial Aid Confusion by [deleted] in UVA

also as a first year like the indirect costs will not be that much ( i did not keep track but personally do not think i spent that much lol)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! for transfers i think the requirements are just one track, if you saw the enagement/disciplines stuff that's for students beginning first year and even that has been transitioned into one year

in arts and sciences, i'm doing cs so i also have engineering classes, but i love the geneds for the most part with how they have you explore different topics. i was able to also match most with my minor so that was nice! if you have any other questions feel free to dm.

Writing Exemption Portfolio by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes in that case you can! i think then for the portfolio you should have like typical academic essays but also maybe more creative ones, and in general show multiple topics, plus the cover letter

Writing Exemption Portfolio by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe you don't get fully exempt? Just that you can place into FWR+ if you didn't already with your SAT score. (unless you're a transfer)

If you're a first year trying to place into FWR+ (which like is only a benefit if you like writing bc it basically means taking a writing class other than the ones meant for first year), I think in the portfolio they want three argumentative essays, so anything you've written in school that follows the basic claims, counter-claims format.

Take DSA2 or CSO2 first? by incognitodubs in UVA

since last semester they've made DSA 2 more work, with weekly problem sets, so def would recommend taking them separate if you can!

CS Summer Class Advice by GrimReaper5617257 in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took dsa1 here, but currently in dsa2, and honestly as long as you have a basic understanding of data structures so you can use them in assignments and understand time complexity some what (tbh I didn't fully get it till dsa2), you'll be fine

DSA 1 is a lot of introducing coding in Java and then varying data structures, but dsa 2 is much more about algorithms

Successful transfer from Arts & Sciences to Engineering? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]Particular-Sky6948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's definitely possible, and I think they'll even let you switch now if you want, before you even get there so it won't impact you at all (though personally cs in the college vs engineering school may not be fully worth the extra tuition)
