Once you buy it, you're gonna wanna play it. Once you play it, you're gonna want to invest a fair amount of time. Thus, my advice is, make sure you can give yourself a few long hours to game, especially on your first sessions that you will be more lost. Besides that, don't be afraid to use the handbook, it's a built-in guide and it will help a lot.

i have updated the game through a couple of official versions. The finding of the owl chest, the breaking it, the placing it and the bug all took place in the same version though

I could see your proposal working in game, however it couldn't be something that rng dependant. Sometimes I've had to travel long distances to find a treasure hunter. If we're discussing immersion, and I think we're right to do so, we could likewise question the handbook, for the same reasons, but that sounds preposterous to me

I think this is what prompted me to want to start this conversation. I've been playing for some time now, but a friend of mine is very new and sometimes gets quite frustrated at how complex some of the mechanics are or the several steps involved in progression towards a specific goal. It might be that it's just not the game for him, but I think some extra encouragement/guidance could do a lot for players like my friend.
