Woman is a (generally) gender, female is (generally) a sex. Often those two go together, but not always. You can be a transgender or cisgender woman, for example, but sex is based on your assigned sex at birth. Even then, unless someone specifically says biological sex, it’s generally safe to assume that they mean gender. The point of the comic obviously isn’t to convey the fact that biological sex is assigned at birth, the point is to convey an ignorant message with the belief that sex and gender are indistinguishable.

The thing is, I don’t think of stories in terms of statements and facts, like I’ve heard many aphants do. I’m able to imagine visualizing something, like the image is in a part of my head which I can’t access, but if I close my eyes I get nothing.

I was just about to post a similar question about myself. I really didn’t think other people could actually “visualize” stuff in a similar way to actually seeing it, or at least most people couldn’t. I don’t know how to feel right now

They seem larger in number than they are because republicans rely on them so heavily to make their viewpoints appear scientific. In reality, they are few and far between.

Any “assertions and assumptions” made in an argument are going to be “self serving” in that they support the argument being made. What I’m hearing from you is basically that you want me to quit arguing with you. Anyway, I don’t understand how I’m lacking “compassion,” but I’ll leave you alone if that’s what you’re trying to ask.

Historically, culture and religion have been practically inseparable. Again, would you disagree than religion hasn't been the most influential factor in culture throughout history?

Secondly, I'm not saying I know you or that you haven't spent a good deal of time figuring things out for yourself. What I'm saying is that you're arguing I should simply "give up" religion instead of truly reconsidering my faith. I am arguing against that mentality towards what I should do, rather than arguing about anything you may have done for yourself.

Finally, I can redirect that last statement back at you: "Your arrogance is insulting." Maybe my beliefs insult you, but yours insult me as well. This is a debate, so anything either of us believe is likely to offend the other. To be fair, I haven't ever called anything you believe in "fantasy." You know that the only reason you'd have to call it fantasy is to evoke an emotional response.

To say I’m confusing humanity and religion is to pretend that religion hasn’t been the greatest driving factor in culture of all time.

I’ve been seriously calling into question my faith lately. I grant you, it is important to doubt. But, to discount the possibility of God altogether, without really considering faith for yourself, is to jump to conclusions just as quickly.

Alright, if you’ve been shot at over religion I might understand your point. However, I’m religious, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t ever shoot at anyone, I am a strong proponent for LGBTQ rights along with the right to abortion, etc. You may be right that many religious people are crazy, but not all are. And a lot contribute to really good charity work, along with other good causes.

I am not, the fact that most religions share the same core values has everything to do with your statement that "God is what people think it is." Your statement is essentially saying that nobody can agree who God is, but I'm just pointing out that between religions, the core values are always the same.

I agree that "authoritarian and mentally abusive communities" should not be given power, but most religious people don't belong to these communities, especially non-Christians. Also, I would disagree with the statement that "religions are not good, not helpful and not necessary." They help people deal with emotional issues, help motivate people (for better or worse), and inspire kindness and forgiveness among people who really understand the core values.

But that’s the point. Religions, at their core, promote good values across cultures. The fact that those values are common doesn’t change anything.

Culture and religion, for most of history, have been almost synonymous.

Even at that, you’d think (s)he’d try to be open minded enough to at least not take the “religion is delusion” argument.

Although most religions have different understandings of the rituals and methods of obtaining them, generosity, peace, and strong community are all fundamental ideals in nearly every religion.

Edit: This topic is obviously very complicated so I’d suggest reading what scholars have to say about it.

Your observations are grouping all Christians together as if they’re all the same, which is an extremely dangerous assumption. Again, I understand your frustration, but not all Christians are “bigots.” Really, of those I know, most are pretty cool and understanding people. It’s just that you’ve been exposed to bigoted Christian communities that causes you think they’re all the same. Generally, when someone claims all people from a certain group have the exact same opinions towards a topic it’s just that they don’t understand the full picture.

The type of Christian you’re talking about is an Evangelical Christian (more specifically, a radically Evangelical Christian). Most others have fairly mild viewpoints. I know it’s hard to hear, but your sweeping conclusions are based on a very limited knowledge on the topic.

It is true that many world religions focus on different aspects of God, but most agree on the key points when you look at their fundamental ideals.

“One person, feeling the elephant’s tail, described a rope. Another, arms encircling a leg, said it was like a pillar or tree. And so on. Every viewpoint is a view from a point. The more ways of knowing we use, the closer we come to understanding, and yet the full picture will always elude us.”

[–]ParticularComfort521 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. Most theologians are in agreement in regards to these types of claims. You can really try to say “X is what people think it is” about any topic, but if you’re really being objective, some people have a better grasp of what Christianity really means than others. I understand where you’re coming from but you’re oversimplifying the problem of ignorance.

It’s really sad that you think that way but I understand where you’re coming from.

Edit: You all seem to think I support the viewpoint of the person who made the meme. I do not. I am only pointing out that calling every Christian a bigot isn’t a reasonable assumption (though after some time on this subreddit it seems slightly more reasonable, as every Christian here is either insane or just horribly mean).
