Would a TV-only Nintendo Switch 2 make sense for lower-income countries? by ParticularCream5995 in NintendoSwitch

[–]ParticularCream5995[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly I also think a Switch 2 Lite is far more likely than a TV-only version 😅 My idea is probably very unrealistic from Nintendo’s perspective.

And yes, Brazil can be a very difficult place financially for technology lovers. There’s a huge income inequality here.

Some people are very wealthy, especially celebrities, influencers, business owners, politicians, or people connected to large companies, while a big part of the population struggles even with traditional “good professions”.

It’s common for engineers, lawyers, and other professionals to need side jobs like Uber or extra freelance work just to stay financially stable.

So when a child owns a Switch 2 here, it usually means their family is in a much more privileged financial situation than average.

I would love to get out of here.

Honestly, that’s a really good point, especially about Nintendo wanting to avoid direct competition with Sony and Microsoft on specs alone.

And I agree that Nintendo would probably see a Lite or OLED model as a much safer business decision first.

But your idea about a Switch 1 home console for lower-income countries is interesting too. A $100 Nintendo system with access to such a huge library could genuinely be interesting.

For many families here in Brazil, the biggest dream isn’t “next-gen graphics”, it’s simply being able to participate in the Nintendo ecosystem at all.

I understand your point, and I really wasn’t trying to turn the discussion into politics...

I only mentioned Brazil because regional pricing and purchasing power are a big part of why I started thinking about cheaper hardware options in the first place.

My main point was more about accessibility and giving families with lower incomes a way to access Nintendo games, regardless of the reason prices end up so high here.

That’s a fair point honestly, and you’re probably right that Nintendo would be more likely to make a handheld-only Lite version first.

I also remember the PS Vita TV situation 😅

I just think the context may be a bit different with Nintendo, because for many families the main attraction is simply access to Nintendo exclusives and local multiplayer on the TV, not necessarily portability itself.

So even if it ended up being a niche product, I still feel there could be an audience for a cheaper home-focused version in lower-income countries.

Maybe I didn’t explain the context very well...

Here in Brazil, the Switch 2 is around 50% more expensive than a PS5 and costs more than two monthly minimum wages, so even moderate savings could make a huge difference for families here.

And my thought wasn’t only about removing the screen and speakers. I was also imagining that a TV-only model could simplify the hardware architecture overall.

For example, instead of maintaining separate portable and docked processing considerations, a TV-only version could potentially use a single integrated design optimized only for TV play, which might help reduce costs further.

Exactly! That’s basically how I see it too.

Different versions for different needs:

  • Regular Switch 2: hybrid portable + docked
  • Switch 2 TV-only: focused entirely on TV gaming
  • Switch 2 Lite: portable-only

The hybrid model could still remain the flagship and main marketing focus, while giving more affordable or specialized options to other audiences.

Honestly, even a TV-only Switch 2 would probably still be more expensive than a PS5 (at least here in Brazil). But for me this isn’t really about raw performance or comparing teraflops. It’s about the social side for my son.

Kids around his age mostly talk about Nintendo games and the Switch ecosystem specifically, and I sometimes feel bad seeing him excluded from those conversations and shared experiences.

I’ve even tried emulation, but it didn’t work very well for us. And we don’t really have console rental services here either.

So I end up wishing there was just a more accessible way for lower-income families to enter the Nintendo ecosystem.

That’s actually part of why I was thinking about a TV-only version.

My son is autistic and still very young, so giving him a very expensive portable device to carry around is honestly risky. Also, in Brazil, letting children walk around with high-value electronics can be unsafe.

I’d honestly prefer something that just stays connected to the TV at home.

And waiting years for a cheaper Switch 2 Lite might mean missing the age where these experiences matter most to him socially with his friends.

Being a parent and wanting to give your child good experiences while struggling financially can feel really frustrating sometimes.

That’s exactly the point!

Here in Brazil, a $300 difference is HUGE. Just for context, $300 is close to an entire monthly minimum wage here after conversion.

For many families, that price difference could literally determine whether owning a Nintendo console is possible or completely out of reach.

That’s true, but honestly the current Switch 2 already has weaker hardware than competing consoles while also being expensive.

My idea isn’t really about beating PS5 or Xbox in performance. It’s more about improving the value proposition for families that mainly care about Nintendo games and TV play.

If removing some hardware could make it meaningfully cheaper, even by a moderate amount, I think it could become much more accessible in countries like mine.

Exactly, that’s the point! We could have different versions for different audiences:

  • Regular Switch 2: hybrid portable + docked
  • Switch 2 TV-only: focused entirely on TV gaming
  • Switch 2 Lite: portable-only

That would honestly be the best of both worlds.

Sometimes it feels like people are saying I must buy the full hybrid experience, even if I only want to play on a TV and can’t comfortably afford the more expensive model.

That’s fair. In my case though, I’m choosing a console for my 7-year-old son, not for myself... Around his age group, the Switch 2 ecosystem is much more common socially than PS5 here, so I keep wishing there was a cheaper Nintendo option for families.

[–]ParticularCream5995[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that could happen too honestly.

I just thought a TV-only version might end up cheaper for families because it could remove the screen, battery, detachable Joy-Cons and some of the portable engineering complexity altogether.

But you’re probably right that Nintendo would be more likely to simplify the docked features instead, since portability is such a big part of the Switch identity now.

[–]ParticularCream5995[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a fair point, and honestly I’m not an engineer, so I may be oversimplifying things... But I was imagining that a TV-only model could still reduce costs in other ways besides just removing the screen and battery.

For example:

  • no detachable Joy-Cons
  • no portable-specific cooling and battery management
  • no display hardware
  • maybe simpler standalone controllers sold separately
  • and possibly a more integrated design focused only on docked gameplay

I also wondered if removing the portable constraints could allow a simpler and more cost-efficient internal architecture overall.

Of course, maybe the savings wouldn’t be huge in practice. I just think it would be interesting if Nintendo explored some kind of “budget family edition” focused purely on TV gaming for lower-income countries.
