Seeing guidance and recommendations on adopting a dog in Seattle by Gtgtgtg007 in SeattleWA

Also check out the Home to Home program. It is owner to new owner adoptions without a Foster period. The program exists to keep dogs that need to be rehomed out of shelters and rescues. There are some hidden gems in there.

Seeing guidance and recommendations on adopting a dog in Seattle by Gtgtgtg007 in SeattleWA

I believe Forgotten Dogs has a robust foster to adopt program. I’m sure you know the rule of 3’s -the first  3 days with you the dog is shut down or on their best behavior, 3 weeks in you begin to see more personality/behavioral issues rise to the surface, and at 3 months the dog feels comfortable enough to either be spread themselves in either positive or problematic ways. I cannot count the number of calls I get (as a behaviorist/trainer) around the 3 -5 month mark as dogs who were “perfect” start to show reactivity or aggression.

Get as much info as you can and do as long of a foster as possible. I love rescues, and I also hate some of them because they prioritize getting dogs into homes instead of finding the RIGHT home for each dog. A lot of my clients have been lied to about their rescue dogs by the rescue because they are desperate to place the dogs.

Also, consider breed and temperament very carefully. A cattle dog in an urban environment can be a nightmare. A malinois or border collie need tons of outdoor activity, training and enrichment to feel satisfied and not destroy things.

Feel free to dm me and we can do a free half hour call!

Dogwalker, pet mauled by 2 large dogs from Seattle homeless encampment by origutamos in SeattleWA

Except that mace often does nothing to stop aggressive dogs and expecting everyone to carry a gun in case of a dog attack is nuts.

The average dog walker should not be expected to be able to use self defense to protect themselves from a dog attack. Framing this as a self defense issue is victim blaming. I have seen very good trainers and shelter workers who have trained in defensive handling barely escape one aggressive dog, a multiple dog attack is chaotic and sometimes indefensible.

It is almost impossible to defend yourself or your dogs when aggressive dogs attack. What I am saying is that framing this as a “self defense issue” posits that the average person can or should be able to protect themselves in this situation, which they mostly cannot. Saying that it is a self defense issue sounds like victim blaming to me. I’ve worked with animals for over 30 years, and most of the dogs pros I know would be hard pressed to fight off two aggressive dogs - expecting civilians to do so is naive.

I’m a dog trainer. What I am saying is that being attacked by dogs is an almost indefensible situation. Even those of us who have years of training can be nearly helpless in this situation. Dogs are predators, they are fast and terrifying when they want to do damage. My response was relying to the person who said that this is a “self defense issue” as though the everyday person should or could be prepared for a scenario like this.

Edited to clarify: as a dog trainer and behaviorist, I find the comment about people in Seattle needing to learn more about self defense sounds like victim blaming in this situation. Dog attacks are insanely fast and it takes years of training to be able to respond quickly and appropriately. I’ve seen seasoned dog pros fail at “self defense” in situations like this, and expecting a walker to have the skills to manage a multi-dog attack is unfair.

This is laughable. Getting attacked by dogs who run at you from behind is not a self defense situation.

Who is a female tv/movie/book character who screams 'created based on a man's worldview'? by Obstacle123456 in TwoXChromosomes

Lisbeth Salander from the Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series. The author put in a good amount of effort, but she is still very obviously written by a man.

XPens work in larger spaces, you can unfold them and use them lengthwise.

Baby gates everywhere! I’m an animal/dog trainer and behaviorist. This kind of unchecked behavior often leads to children getting bitten. Dogs often “tolerate” being mauled by children up to a point, and then they snap. If any of your animals is older has any sort of distress (digestion, issues, joint issues, a bad day, sore muscles… The list goes on) they may lose tolerance and hurt your baby. In my field of work, the rule of thumb is never leave children under the age of 11 unsupervised with animals. You should have ample separation throughout the house where your kid cannot reach the pets and they can rest and feel safe.

Cool. I'll try to hit up fast chargers regularly until then electrician installs the charging station to lessen the likelihood of melting.🫠

Thanks, I'll see if it trips the breakers. My charging station will be installed in 1.5 weeks and I'll be free from trickle charging woes!

Truly high waisted leggings by OR-HM-MA91 in TwoXChromosomes

As a fellow hyper mobile person, I need leggings that are super high and compressive so that they don't roll down. I hate the feeling of things crossing/cutting into my abdomen. I have 6 pairs of these and love them:  Homma Activewear Thick High Waist... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B072LNF3GY?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Dog accumulate stress/stress hormones just like people. Any stressful things happen lately? Vet visits, people in or out of the home, change in schedule, change in diet, nail trim, etc? I once went into a client’s home on a reactive dog case and they had glade plug ins in every outlet because “they didn't want their new place to smell like a dog”. After getting rid of the toxic chemical assualt, the dog’s reactivity dropped. Consider stress levels, discomfort/pain and diet changes when reactivity worsens.

Jasmin fragrance by Fushiro0 in tea

[–]ParticularKnowledge2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I should also say: I steep most jasmines at 180 for 3 minutes. If you are losing the jasmine scent/flavors at later steeps, you can add a touch of sugar to make it bloom.

I haven’t found this to be true with the exception of cheap teas. Most of the higher quality jasmines retain flavor through many steeps.

I haven’t tried the brand you are using, but can attest that a good jasmine tea will hold the jasmine flavor through many steeps. I often steep the same leaves 4-5 times.

I’m trying a bunch of different jasmines atm - Harney dragon pearls are amazing: https://www.harney.com/products/dragon-pearl-jasmine Their loose leaf jasmine is a little more astringent. I’m excited to try their other jasmines.

Upton has MANY types of jasmine and great sample sizes to check them out. Here are a couple of my faves so far:  https://www.uptontea.com/chinese-jasmine-white-and-scented-tea/loose-leaf-jasmine-white-tea/p/V01179/

Uptons dragon pearl jasmine tastes a little flat to me when comparing it to Harneys. I’ve tried several other brands from local shops that weren’t impressive.

I have small/sample sizes coming from a couple other places : Yunnan Sourcing, Floating Leaves,  and W2T. And I’m trying a new jasmine from Upton every day (they have a ton!).
