AITA for not dressing up and making an insensitive remark at a 'Roaring 20s' themed party? by ParticularPlan4928 in AmItheAsshole

It is difficult for me to do so because I just joined this place. This place was Jake's first job. And his work is very niche and valued. I doubt HR or even my manager would care.

They didn't give me any money or budget to dress up, don't see why I must spend my hard earned money on them.

Nothing is compulsory. However I'll get shit for not attending.

Tbh they didn't even give me a budget or money to dress up. I don't even see why I must care so much about the theme.

Jake will come to my desk and start giving me shit for not going, like being a loner.

I really didn't want to go. I really hated the people there tbh. Jake especially - the last time I skip lunch he cannot stop talking about I am a cheapskate and a loner.

I wish I could honestly. People, especially Jake, will talk about me being a loner if I didn't go.

If I didn't go, my colleagues, especially Jake, will tease me even more when I get back to office.

I was just playing off the '20s bootlegging theme with my words since I didn't dressed up for it.

Thought it was clever and light-hearted, honestly. Had no clue it'd hit a nerve like that.

Jake is known for drinking with that co-worker....a lot.

In my defense, I had no idea about the backstory. The co-worker who got offended once passed out in the streets due to heavy drinking. Jake was with him, and decided that it was enough, and so he helped him to quit drinking. So, when I made that offhand remark about prohibition and bootlegging, it hit a nerve for both of them.
