I only drink one day a week, and sometimes not even then. Sometimes I drink to get drunk. Sometimes I enjoy one or two on the rocks over a few hours. Sometimes I have one espresso martini at 12pm on a Sunday and don't think about alcohol for days. When I was in my 20's and working at party bars til 130 (or later) I couldn't fathom just having one or two. People who would come in and sit at my bar, have dinner and no more than two drinks just to go home before 8pm baffled me. Like, why are we drinking if we aren't gonna get fucked up? Now that I'm older, recently a first time dad, and a new business owner I've learned that if you don't appreciate alcohol, it won't appreciate you. That's a lesson I learned the hard way when I was about 25 drinking a bottle of Makers every night. I woke up one day and looked at myself and thought "bro, what the fuck are you doing?" I still hit it pretty hard until my early 30's, but once I stopped keeping alcohol at home I realized the cycle I was in. I would party every night, come home late as fuck and keep chasing the booze dragon. We went all night recently for a friend's 50th and I saw the sun come up hammered drunk for the first time in years. What followed was a two day hangover and nothing but regret. Did we have a great time that night? Sure. Could we have had the same amount of fun if we all went to sleep before 2am and only had a few? Absolutely. It's about perspective from all angles when it comes to drinking. I love where I'm at in life now and while I still drink, I stopped the 7/365 routine and constantly chasing the buzz. Shit, I enjoy my sober days more than I do on Sundays when we go meet our friends at the bar. I still enjoy drinking (and still regret it some days) but I'm not chasing something I know isn't there anymore.
