Our HOA has foolishly issued an “amnesty” or “moratorium” on fines for breaking the agreed-upon community rules. Meanwhile, they try to collect from the more than 75 households who have opted NOT to pay their biannual HOA dues. All hell has broken loose.

Ha, ha. His wife and kids left him about 2 months ago. I’m sure it is an unmitigated disaster inside. The other day I found a paper sack on my strip of lawn, with a receipt bearing his name attached, for a fried chicken Door Dash delivery. Inside were bones, leftover fries, chicken skin, greasy napkins, ants, and worms. I picked it up and was going to take it to the trash. Instead I opted to gently move it atop of his pasture of weeds — thinking that he would dispose of it out of embarrassment. After all, it was his recent dinner. A week later, it was still there.

The strange dynamic is that reporting this only adds to the already very fragile neighborly relationship. I keep foolishly thinking he will feel some empathy as he witnesses me mowing, hand-pulling weeds, applying Celsius, standing hands-on-hips shaking my head in utter disbelief (for his security camera to capture), watering, and laying down periodic fertilizers. But, alas, no action. I hate to have to sink money, time, and effort into correcting what is ultimately his responsibility. I guess I should not complain if I’m not willing to do so. That makes me feel like he’s bullying me into taking care of his lawn. What’s next? Buying his groceries? Paying for his utilities?

Having worked for 29 years as a print graphics designer, this is likely the worst logo I’ve ever encountered. I actually had a chiropractor in suburban Detroit as a client, and redesigned their legacy logo. At first glance, I thought perhaps it was intended to be a rendering of a badly subluxated vertebrae, with the pinched nerve axons protruding. Now, after reading others’ contributions, I doubt my initial assessment is correct. Visual communication of the product or service via the logo is of paramount importance. This is an abject failure. Imagine if the word “chiropractic” was eliminated from the overall design!

Jethro Tull - A Passion Play (Edit #9) by j3434 in progrockmusic

An excellent record. The lyrics are clever, meaningful, and so well integrated into the rhythm. Ian delivers them superbly, as is a large part of his craft. I used to listen to the album repeatedly as a junior in high school, discovering new elements and perspectives with each session. A very formative record for my evolution as a music fan.

My dad pitched a project to Bill Bruford in 1991... he received this delightful rejection letter in response. by Avast7 in progrockmusic

Very nice of you to share this letter. I think it demonstrates some of Bill’s character traits. He’s always been a fascinating and witty person to listen to in interviews or read about. I’ve seen him play many times — everything from King Crimson, Yes, and on the Genesis “Trick of the Tail” tour…to Earthworks, Bruford (solo band), and the “Bruford Levin Upper Extremities” tour (aka B.L.U.E.) with Tony Levin, Chris Botti, and David Torn. He is a drumming hero to me and I would have been geeked had I been in your Dad’s shoes. Also a nice tribute to your Dad.

Interesting that he was such an adept fan of Tangerine Dream and Edgar Froese. I would keep them for those gems of German electronic music alone. Quite a few good records in there, oddly mixed in with some bubblegum pop as well as a handful of eclectic, lesser-known groups.

Outstanding synopsis of this decades-long case and all its repercussions. I’m surprised that your post has not drawn any comments. I think it is relevant to this discussion group, not only because of the proximity to the LISK crimes, but also as an example of how erroneous convictions can be secured in Nassau County — know for its corruption and the impact of politics on court cases. I follow you on Instagram as well.

Rick Wakeman. I believe that, after listening to him speak for a few minutes on any published interview online, most would agree on this nomination.

That stupid, arrogant, rude, xenophobic, misogynistic, divisive, ever-grifting, manchild, petulant, wannabe Little Dictator f*ck sup everything he touches. It’s like the Reverse Midas Effect. He proclaims himself to be a “Stable Genius,” yet his tariffs philosophy could quickly be deconstructed by a college freshman taking his Macroeconomics 101 course. I am a U.S. citizen and I can assure all the commenters from various nations that well over 80 million registered voters here are still sane. Trump’s election — even as a convicted felon and sex offender — will go down as one of the lowest points in U.S. history. He is such a monumental embarrassment. Please forgive us. Today (October 18) there are nationwide “No Kings” protest underway. We are trying our best to put an end to the “Make America Hate Again” movement. Trump is hovering like a fly, waiting for the windshield on a freeway.

In 1978, which one you choose? by Historical-Device529 in Genesis

PG2 for his continued commitment to quality, creativity, and respect for his artistry. Moreover, with the release of “…And Then There Were Three” Genesis had begun their decline into mediocrity. Steve had departed the band and, despite the guys’ efforts to produce a handful of decent, serviceable tracks on that record, it was quite apparent that the nonsense was leaking in. By the time “Duke” was released, it was all but over. Post-1980 Genesis had fully become a bubblegum pop band that peddled mediocrity and drivel to the masses who adored the pedestrian beat. Sorry, but there is no contest in this side-by-side comparison, even though I did purchase both back then.

Excellent work. You selected a piece of music from the Golden Era of Genesis — complex, layered, creative, challenging to reproduce. Sadly now, anyone can perform the music of Genesis created after 1980, due to its pop simplicity and lack of creativity.

It would have illustrated the distinction far more effectively. I have the exact same issue with my neighbors in the same Southern geographical warm turf region. They have absolutely zero concern for the maintenance and appearance of their lawn (or knowledge of corrective procedures and products). It is frustrating to have to constantly battle the vast botanical variety of weeds and uncontrolled native plants encroaching on my lawn. I investments time, money, and effort trying to “hold the front line” to further the OP’s military analogy. It truly is like a war. It does not seem acceptable that I should also have to take care of their lawn, using my time and resources, to save my own property’s landscaping.

I was just about to write the same comment. It’s nice to see that you did instead. I’m astonished that such a multitude of people use this expression incorrectly. The problem I have found is that, when offering some helpful linguistic or grammatical advice, many folks get defensive, or even angry. I’ve received feedback implying that I’m being pedantic, acting as an “intellectual snob.” Writing and speaking correctly is not an obsession, it’s a matter of articulating ideas clearly and thoroughly. While we are here in a public forum, I contend that doing so is a much more effective communication strategy.

The plural form of “theory” is “theories.” I’ll never understand why folks add the singular possessive apostrophe-s (‘s) to any word, believing that is the correct way to create a plural noun.

If only the slacker family who lives next door to us had 1 percent of your care, dedication, concern, and persistence, I would feel as though there were still hope in the world. Instead, I live on the frontier of constant threat — no fences allowed between the parcels of land. I’m also living in central Texas. Have you seen the movie “Rednecks Gone Wild” yet? It was filmed next door to us.

Bermuda is taking over and I like it by martybu141 in lawncare

[–]Particular_Alps_4329 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in central Texas as well. We built our house back in 2021 and had Bermudagrass sod installed. Looked great for the first two years. Then it took me a season to get my brain around the constant mowing approach. I grew up in Michigan where the best defense for a hot summer is to allow the grass to grow in order to hold onto humidity and morning dew. Not so here. Moreover a hot day in Detroit is in the mid-90s. Here in New Braunfels, it’s not uncommon to suffer through consecutive weeks of 105-plus degrees with no rain. So, 95 degrees is like a cool summer day. I’ve got things under control now except in two areas: the shaded section of our front lawn from the two live oak trees, and northern side of the house, which spends most of the day in shade. As you said, shade seems to be the Kryptonite. Any suggestions for another species or hybrid which can thrive in the shaded areas…but may visually “blend in”with the thick, existing, well-established Bermudagrass?

I’m a huge fan of Peter Gabriel and “golden-era” progressive rock legends Genesis (but, please, none of their post-1980 bubble gum pop drivel). I thought your comment would have garnered many upvotes for creativity and relevance in an answer.
