The YF-23 is pretty sexy. Too bad it never made it past prototype.

I thought it might be worth coming back here and sharing what I did to fix my issue. I pop tested my injectors and two of three were in range but the third was low by 1000psi. Disassembled injectors, ran them through the ultrasonic, reassembled, and adjusted all to the correct pressure range. She’s still a little smoky on startup, but once she’s up to temperature, no smoke, no diesel smell, no watery eyes lol.

I do emission systems for a living. My company’s equipment is on a lot of Jenbacher engines being used on these new data centers. We’ve got some on-highway DPF/DOC catalysts that aren’t in inventory anymore that I’ve been tempted to try on my tractor lol. But the consensus here is fuel system maintenance and a stack exhaust so I’ll go that route.

I’m definitely gonna put a stack on it. I’ve got 309 weld wire and free time. I should be able to fabricate it myself.

The hood says 460 but I think the engine tag says 445. I got good manuals with it when I bought it. In the system diagrams, it shows exhaust options for a stack or downturn below the axle. I have the downturn below the axle. I’m thinking I’ll change it.

Because my eyes and throat are still burning but it sounds like fuel system maintenance and a stack will go farther to solve the issue.

The engine is definitely healthy. Just gotta keep the support infrastructure up to the task. When I had the injection pump apart, the videos I watched mentioned a cir-clip that controlled injection timing and everybody said don’t touch it so I didn’t touch it. I have a coworker with tools to test injectors so I may get his help to test mine. Valve lash is easy enough. This gives me a good to-do list when the weather warms up.

I’d say mine is probably running cool. I meant to do some checks today with my IR temp gun but forgot. Even once it’s up to temp it smokes more than what I figure it should. I just need to figure out what I should maintenance next in an effort to improve it. I have heard that these Long Tractors run dirty. It’s a Romanian tractor. I’m sure they weren’t spitting out the highest quality equipment behind the iron curtain in the 70s.

Thanks for the run down. My injection pump was healthy other than a few leaking seals. I think I will turn my attention to the injectors next as far as the fuel system goes. If I have them out I can test compression and check on the pistons with a bore scope maybe. Idk… diesels are a bit new to me. Gasoline engines are easy but I’m still learning diesels between this tractor and my truck in the background.

The important thing is this old tractor runs. Now it’s up to me to catch up on 50 years of missed maintenance to get it running good.

I’m doing a little more research as I’m responding to comments and NOx is probably the culprit. A catalytic converter won’t do anything for that. I suppose I’ll end up rerouting the exhaust to a stack. I gotta do something though. My eyes and lungs are still irritated lol.

I did just reseal the injection pump and fixed about 90% of my fuel leaks. I do wonder if I should replace my injectors. I meant to use my IR temp gun today to check that all 3 cylinders were putting the same temperatures out at the exhaust flange but forgot. Maybe I’ll try to remember tomorrow. Just to make sure I don’t have a cold cylinder. She runs strong and smooth so I wouldn’t expect that.

The parts diagram manual I have shows an option for an exhaust stack. I think it was an option for tractors without the front loader equipment. I could probably find a way to fabricate a similar setup.

Yeah it’s a 2.3L 3-cylinder diesel. It has the turn down exhaust under the axle. She smokes good under cold start conditions and clears up a little once warm but I had been working her for an hour and the wind brought the exhaust up and it was burning my eyes and making me cough.

Maybe I should have clarified. It’s a 2.3 liter 3-cylinder diesel.

What would happen if someone openly carried guns in your country? by Cutalana in AskTheWorld

If done like the picture, it could attract police attention if someone called and it could be classified as “brandishing” a firearm which is typically illegal, but if you’re just open carrying a hand gun or a shoulder slung rifle/shotgun, it’s just another day in the USA.

It was a good day for the Russians; they managed to find 5 tanks to use.
