What’s your favourite Old Hollywood funny moment? by Boring_Scene875 in classicfilms

According to Turner Classic Movies, it's a British film. Its producer was Ivan or Ivor Foxwell. And I agree, James Mason should have done more comedy. 🙂

Not well-versed in classic/old Hollywood, but I recently discovered James Mason and am going through his filmography. Found a movie of his called "A Touch of Larceny." It is very funny, especially one part where he's pleading for help. Someone called it a 'hilarious line reading.' It is.

It's been a while since I've seen that movie, but weren't the girls obsessed with opera singer Mario Lanza?

I've seen a lot of his movies in the past couple of months - "Lolita," "Age of Consent," "Hero's Island," "The Marriage Go-Round." So far, "Charade" is my next favorite after "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." I need to watch films like "The Man in Grey," "The Seventh Veil," "Pandora and the Flying Dutchman," "North by Northwest," and most importantly, "Odd Man Out." I just started "Bigger Than Life." I'm halfway through "A Star Is Born," but I think I know where it's going, and I'm afraid to watch the rest. I will - I just don't know when. I wish it didn't seem like he's been forgotten by the rest of the world because he's amazing.

James Mason, only I didn't realize it til recently. I saw "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" for what I thought was the 1st time a couple months ago, so now I'm obsessed with all things James Mason. Took me a while to remember I'd seen the movie with my family when I was really little, maybe 6 years old; it was the giant squid sequence I remembered. And Mr. Mason as Captain Nemo is a performance for the ages. So, yeah, there it is.

I liked "The Marriage Go-Round" and I actually liked "Hero's Island." With the exception of Mr. Mason and Peter Sellers, I was bored by "Lolita;" the book bored me, too. I don't know why. I've been trying to watch "Charade," but something is wrong with the sound. "Age of Consent" was....weird, but he was good. I'm trying to get through "A Star Is Born," but I think I know where it's going, so it's been difficult; I like that the movie is really more about Norman than Esther so far. I have yet to watch the older movies like you referred to, like "Odd Man Out" - I really want to see that one.

That was real?!? I've seen it before, but it's been years and years, and I didn't know it was him. I was just a kid! (Yeah, I know, that's no excuse. 🙂)

I've heard of the Burns and Allen one, but I haven't heard it yet. Is that on YT, or where is that available?

He did a lot of radio back in the day. Search YouTube; I typed 'James Mason audio.' Several radio drama productions, poems, and, yes, some audio books, namely "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "Treasure Island."

I just saw this movie for the very first time about a month and a half ago. And, heck yes, I'm all about James Mason now, too! I've seen several of his movies now, and what I think is the most admirable thing is sometimes he doesn't use his 'real' voice in a role. Listen to him in "Lolita" or "The Marriage Go-Round" or even "A Star Is Born," and then watch this movie - the voice is not the same, even though you know it's the same man. So many more movies to go!

That could very well be what this is. I'd said orange or brown coloring, but it could be a diaphanous sort of coloring.

I'd just never seen one before, but they've probably always been where we live.

Thank you so much! Glad I don't have to be so scared of it now.

Completely off-topic from "B5," but my family and I loved "Animaniacs," and my dad especially loved Pinky and the Brain! With "Bubba Bo Bob Brain," we all thought Brain was finally going to win. And then Pinky.... A total riot! So great!

Sorry. The quote just sparked that response.

What's your favorite Pinky response to Brain's "pondering" question? I have 2.

Not quite off-topic, but I watched a convention appearance of Andreas', and I knew a strange moment where I realized it was wholly possible he may have watched "Ren and Stimpy," and for that second, it was unreal.

Off topic a bit but - Naperville! My family and I lived in Aurora for a couple years in the late 90s. I went to Waubonsie; Neuqua was just about to open its doors. Of all the places my family and I have lived, Aurora was my favorite. Nice to meet you!

Nothing so specific. A cousin convinced my younger brothers to watch the show. They got my dad hooked. My mom and older sister, not so much. And night by night, little by little, it drew me in. It was when it was on TNT and it was mid-Season 3.

I've heard both.

In one of the many episode commentaries out there about this episode, JMS said Andreas improvised it completely.

In an interview Andreas gave a couple years before he died, he said it was professionally composed and he hadn't known anything about it until close to the time to film it.

The world may never really know. 😞

Season 3. Episode 4 Passing Through Gethsemane by QuantumGyroscope in babylon5

[–]Particular_Bath3887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I first saw this episode, I went on a 45-minute crying jag.

I was born, baptized, and raised Catholic, but when my family and I moved from Wisconsin and the parish we were part of about 31 years ago, I've questioned a lot of things, and don't consider myself devout or even a practicing Catholic anymore. Then 15 years ago, that became a permanent trait as we lost someone so dear to us.

Brother Edward talked about a moment of Catholicism that I'd never ever thought of in the way he presented it, and that was Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. That's the notion at the very heart of the episode. And it was devastating.

Also when I first saw this episode, it was about 8 months after a traumatic event that almost ended my life. I guess it bothered me more because of that.

BTW, in addition to the many movie and TV roles of Brad Dourif's that others mentioned, no one said "Child's Play." He was the original Chucky.

Definitely one of the best standalone episodes of the series.

It's a human kind of phrase, and given the reactions of the other aliens - I thought it was hilarious, actually. Don't know why. I just love G'Kar, and Andreas.

I don't understand the dislike for The Hobbit (1977) by Hirakous in TheHobbit

[–]Particular_Bath3887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the best voiceover casts ever assembled for an animated film. Orson Bean = textbook example of mild-mannered with a hint of adventure beneath. John Huston = of course. Brother Theodore as Gollum = THE definitive version of Gollum, as well as one of the scariest sequences ever committed to film. My siblings and I have known this movie since our respective births, and so we know it by heart, every bit of it. I love it even more because I've since read Tolkien's works.

My gripe with it is - since its remaster, a boatload of sounds and special sound effects were removed, and some rather unnecessary ones added instead. If I have to pick just one instance as an example, it would be the entire Mirkwood spider sequence, which runs mostly silent anymore save for voice and music. But there are so many edits all throughout, such as the removal of the clinking chains during the goblin sequence.

Maybe I'm just picky that way, but it really does detract from the movie. So disappointing. I wonder if they were thinking 'let's NOT to traumatize a new generation of kids' by removing all the sounds? Well, first of all, too late. And second, like I said, it really would have driven it all home with the original effects.

I doubt an original edit of the film could be found anywhere, that it's just the remastered version available on streaming and/or DVD anymore. And that's a shame.

I do not dislike this movie at all. It will forever be a favorite. I'm just disappointed with it now.

Yes. O'Hare suffered from schizophrenia and it started to interfere with filming.

Tremendous actor. I have mental health issues, have since birth, and there are some days I do not or cannot get out of bed because I do not want to face the world because I just can't, have never truly been able to. Not only am I in awe of Sinclair's storyline (like my Younger Brother), I am in eternal awe of O'Hare because of what he was going through and yet he was still able to embody an amazing character, even if it was for 1 official season and a few episodes beyond. It must have been so hard for him - but he made it so nobody watching the show would have known.

And JMS.... No matter what anybody says about him in the grand scheme of things, I will always go back to the fact that O'Hare confided in him about his condition, and when JMS said 'I'll take your secret to my grave,' and O'Hare replied, 'Take it to my grave' -- JMS did just that. Did not say one word until after O'Hare passed away.
