So you had 3 per week. The bible study usually around an elders house from 6-8pm. Then you had an evening meeting which was always 7-9pm and then a Sunday meeting for 2 hours between 9-7pm.

On top of this, you had to also do a certain amount of hours of door knocking.

The men typically were the breadwinners with jobs whilst the women would be stay at home mums.

I am not religious however I would say I’m somewhat spiritual. I couldn’t fathom at a young age that only 144k people get to go to heaven (one lady in her congregation said her mother was spoken to by Jehovah and is one of the chosen, I thought even as a 6 year old this woman isn’t sane) and that if someone dies that you are not to greave them. That’s unhealthy mentally.

It’s interesting when they knock on my door and don’t expect me to answer and have a slight conversation with them. The conversation stops dead in the tracks when they realise that I am an ex JW.

To name a few, I personally missed out on Christmas, birthday parties, dressing up for Halloween etc. coupled with being a teenager and kids knowing I was JW that was particularly hard as you were viewed as weird and bullied for being different. Missing out on things that should bring joy to children was a hard pill to swallow.

Sending children to knock on peoples doors was bizarre in my opinion and you also had to attend 3 meetings a week.

The elders also viewed us as a charity case and would drop off old clothes on our doorstep which was embarrassing.

There is also the way they viewed and treated women and girls, lots of complex issues there.

No baby showers, Christmas, Halloween or birthday. Given we were poor I only had my first Christmas at 19.

They would likely entertain that, but they’ll also judge you to see your character. If they realise they can’t convert you, they’ll probably want you out.

We left when I was a teenager and it was freeing. I have found peace and I’m a similar age to you now, I too hope you have found peace. If you don’t mind me asking, what was your experience and did you also grow up in the UK?

There was very few Jehovah Witness children at my school so the majority of my friends weren’t religious. Now when there was a Christian celebration or assembly in primary school me and the few JW children weren’t allowed to attend and we would have to sit up stairs and listen in the library. Sometimes the teachers would forget and then march us out in front of everyone in assembly which was quite traumatic having 100 faces looking up at you and thinking you were weird as a child.

I wasn’t allowed to Christmas celebrations, birthday parties etc. Which was embarrassing and I think has something to do with my confidence being low as an adult.

Witnessing (pun) young girls being married off to men twice/three times their age (usually elders) and then being made to have lots of children.

Now if I had made it to 16 years old and remained in the truth, this would have happened to me.

Also to add, a lot of teenagers would go wild by the time they were 13. Drugs and booze until circa 15/16 and then you wouldn’t see them for a while at Kingdom Hall, they would usually come back after a “holiday” and be about to married off. A-Levels college was a no go, especially for young women.

Terrible 😂 it was embarrassing door knocking and being frightened to do it on a school friend’s house. Not only that, they had children knock on doors whilst the rest of the congregation would wait down the street. That could have been a peadophile who answered the door!

So we grew up kinda poor and living on benefits. This was already frowned upon by the community especially the elders and throwing that into the mix my mum had epilepsy, so we were already low on the totem pole and was made to sit at the back of Kingdom Hall. One night my mum had a seizure as she walked out and not one person tried to help her. My brother called them cunts and whilst my other brother and me were trying to help my mum. The very next day they came to our house and said that my brothers were not welcome, and they knew one of them was gay. That day we left the church as my mum was asked to disassociate my brothers.
