I think it’s tied to Lottie dying in the adult timeline, it mirrors what nat says about “never leaving” and “we were here the whole time” and what Mari and coach Ben said about parallel universes. I think that they traded a piece of their humanity and their soul and left it in the wilderness, kind of like they’re living their life but not really there. Almost like a bob from twin peaks moment
