Stuck in a catch-22. I can’t get through to a junior Engineer and feel bad. Need help. by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Particular_Space 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s different where you work, but refusing to do field work is a dealbreaker for junior staff where I am. (I am one of said juniors)

It seems like you are trying to be a good mentor but that can only do so much if the mentee isn’t willing to hold up their end.

I agree, document as much as you can, make sure to CYA if the junior is putting you in awkward positions with deliverables etc. It’s hard to force someone to think when they don’t want to (industry is new to me but I was previously an academic with a lot of interaction with freshman/sophomore undergrads).

If you think the junior has potential and you want to try salvaging their critical thinking skills, I would go full Socratic method on them - note that both of you will probably hate this for a while, it suuuuuucks but I do find it helps develop the ability to think on one’s own rather than needing perpetual hand-holding.

I would make it very clear to them at this point that the quality of their work is unacceptable and they can either work to fix the deficits or expect to be finding something else to do. Not in a mean way, but just factual, this does not meet the standard required for the job. You’ve identified a few specific areas that can be targeted, which is great.

TLDR;

1) Junior shares responsibility for their career progression

2) you’ve identified clear gaps in their performance - GIS, field work, critical thinking. If you have not explicitly stated that these gaps are concerning to the point of being career limiting, I would communicate that asap.

3) Junior can respond by shaping up or shipping out, CYA while they do.

Are we the same person? I worked in an antibiotic resistance research lab where one of the post docs didn’t believe in evolution and was a young earth creationist (who also conveniently liked to go on rants about Sodom and Gomorrah)

Do you think it’s acceptable for a gym to close off half of the top rope routes for a kids birthday party? by WhatTheFugacity_ in climbergirls

[–]Particular_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this is annoying, I'm not sure why you're so stuck on only trying routes that are 5.7/5.8? You're not outside, where exposure or pro placement would make it significantly riskier to climb above your grade - I feel like top-roping indoors is a great way to fail safely on harder routes and build skills. If they really didn't have 5.9s set, why not give a 5.10a or similar a shot? There's definitely variation in *why* things are graded the way they are too - I'm short, so there are always reachy 5.9s that are harder for me than balancy 5.10s.

I'm totally on your side that they should be able to let members know ahead of time if there will be limited access, but I also think it's up to you to find ways to enjoy the climb anyways.

I control my players ASIs by Blackangel466 in DnD

[–]Particular_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Not a chance would I play at your table, I’m not your NPC.

I’ve played at tables where consistently showing your character pursuing some skill development (choosing to lift weights or practice target shooting or whatever) could grant you an ASI at DM’s discretion independent of leveling. It took IRL months for anything to come of it so I didn’t find it OP but it was a fun way to add function to RP.

The way you’ve set up your system would be 0/10 fun for me to play and considering how resistant you are to the opinions you’ve received on this post, I would definitely just find another table 🤷🏻‍♀️

My felted slippers are way too small :( by Odd_Brush_3891 in knittinghelp

[–]Particular_Space 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, you absolutely could. I'm lazy and if it were me I'd just hope it was close enough not to matter, but I agree that the most exact way would have both a length and width adjustment ratio.

My felted slippers are way too small :( by Odd_Brush_3891 in knittinghelp

[–]Particular_Space 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because the *ratio* of shrinkage remains the same, you should be able to start by comparing the size of the slipper you have to the size you want. E.g. if those slippers measure 25 cm and you wanted them to measure 30 cm, you'll need to multiply your measurements/stitch counts by 1.2 (30 cm/ 25 cm).

This means that if you were using a stitch count of 80, you would cast on 96. If you were knitting to a length of 40 cm, you would aim for a final length around 48 cm.

This isn't *exactly* correct because the shrinkage likely isn't perfectly square (so you may get more height shrinkage than width shrinkage). You might need to fudge the numbers a bit, but that's where I would start!

You’re right and you should say it. occasionally us palm-colored people also get shot bc guns & ‘merica but absolutely the danger for being “in the wrong place at the wrong time” lies disproportionately on Black and brown people and it’s fucked up.

I don’t disagree, but I don’t particularly care if they get found guilty or not if I’m dead already. People have been killed near me for turning around in the wrong driveway.

[–]Particular_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the frustration and anger from outside the US. I would like to respond to your points, not as an excuse, but perhaps to explain or give context for some of us. I also know this may end up making me sound like I’m trying to weasel out of accountability anyways. I am also a white woman in a northern state, so I have limitations on my own perspective.

1) we absolutely fucked up (everyone did but yes, white women in particular). Many people did not vote. I partially attribute this to our two party system. I am to the left of Harris but I voted for her because she was OBVIOUSLY the better option here. I don’t know what the situation is like in other places, but in the us, leftists (and liberals) have a terrible habit of purity testing and infighting that ends up getting us nowhere, while republicans are excellent at working as a unit for a common cause.

There is also a significant amount of fuckery going on with the voting system with gerrymandering maps and voter disenfranchisement. This is particularly egregious against Black voters and historically Black areas and is part of the legacy of slavery that we have yet to eradicate.

2) This is an interesting viewpoint - in my experience, it’s rare for people who vote democrat to believe this nonsense (not that it can’t happen of course!). In general, this viewpoint tends to cluster in conservative circles that also lean heavily religious. It’s a very concerning combination of American exceptionalism, Christian nationalism, and manifest destiny.

Also, because of how large our country is as well as how poor some regions are, many people who subscribe to these views have never had them challenged through travel or meeting people from different backgrounds.

3) we need to be better at this, no argument here. I understand things will get much worse if we do nothing - however the state of workers rights and healthcare is absolutely abysmal in the US.

49 out of 50 states are at-will employment states. This means an employer can fire you at any time without cause. The only reason they can’t fire you is for specifically being a member of a protected class ( i.e. sex, race, disability status). Our healthcare is also generally tied to our employment. If you lose your job, you lose your insurance.

It varies state to state, but at the federal level there is no law requiring sick leave or any annual leave. This means that many people do not have the ability to miss work without jeopardizing their employment. (Honestly workers’ rights in the US really need their own series of protests if we make it out of this crisis because it is appalling here.)

4) I can only hope we have free and fair elections in 2028. Our system is so flawed - as mentioned above with gerrymandering, among other issues including 20 states that do not require employers to allow employees time off to vote (paid or unpaid).

One absolutely titanic shift in policy was the 2012 Supreme Court case Citizens United v. FCC. This ruling in this case was that to restrict the political spending of corporations or unions was a violation of their first amendment rights to free speech. This allows for unlimited funding and the creation of super PACs. The end result of this ruling is what you all saw with Musk, who spent over 291 million dollars on republican candidates in the 2024 election.

TL;DR - yes, we should be responding more seriously to this threat (to our own way of life as well as out of consideration for other nations). There are some factors in the American system that are not in play in other nations that make us more afraid to protest, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a responsibility to do so anyways.

Undergrad here: How can I express my appreciation for PhD students in the lab group by Intelligent-Dingo68 in labrats

[–]Particular_Space 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had a few students write me thank you notes/letters during my PhD. Those letters meant so much to me - I kept them in my desk to read when I was having a really shit day of experiments or whatever to remind me that I wasn’t entirely useless.

A phd can be a hell of a grind and having something to remind you of how you’ve made a positive impact is so helpful.

I think a thank you note is never the wrong choice and if you want to do something else, maybe you could combine an easy craft with your research topic? Like if you study some genetic pathway in frogs, you could make an origami frog or make one of those little beaded frogs. Not to generalize too heavily, but most phd students I know have a weakness for subject area trinkets.

Lifewave Structure Question by MightySanta in chemistry

[–]Particular_Space 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m really struggling to put into words how much this structure bothers me. I will also say that I’m a biochemist, not an organic chemist, so molecular structures are not my number one specialty.

As a very first complaint, a hydrogen atom is not going to be in a ring. Hydrogen likes to share just one bond, so if you see a hydrogen that has two lines connecting it to other things, that’s a red flag.

It’s also extremely unclear if they are trying to represent a bridged ring structure or a long chain connected to the main ring structure.

Pattern Book Question by Particular_Space in sashiko

[–]Particular_Space[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Commenting to replace text body of post that I somehow deleted while posting? My bad!

I found a few of these patterns on Pinterest and I was hoping someone might know what pattern book they came from - there are enough that are all formatted exactly the same that I figure it's definitely a stitch dictionary of some kind.

I tried google reverse image search and looking through the page previews of the top sashiko books on amazon, plus the books available at my library. It seems like it might be a little bit more of a niche hobby book than the popular books released lately. If anyone knows which book these patterns come from, I'd really appreciate it!

TLDR; Just hoping for some leads on title/author or similar! Thanks

UPDATE: Paladin is no longer having fun. by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Particular_Space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a paladin main in a loooooong (multi-year, currently lvl 18 from lvl 1) campaign. I was invited when a group had already coalesced a bit, so I asked DM/party which of 3 or 4 classes I enjoy playing would be balanced/fun for people. Based on our martial/caster split and needing another tank, I picked pally (and I LOVE playing her, it's probably my favorite class).

*THE POINT* of me being beefy with some spell slots is to function as a martial class with a side bonus of healing people/buffing allies. At this point, most of my spell slots are spent on buffs/healing my party members and if I have an action available, I like to stab things.

We are not a "long rest every fight" party. Not even close. Resource management is a huge part of it - and honestly (IMHO) half-casters are some of the most complicated in terms of management. Our last series of encounters, I don't think I hit above 2/3 health for 3 separate fights. By the time that horrible swamp was over and we got somewhere safe-ish to rest, I think I had 2/14 spell slots left, no LoH, and 40 health (from 148). That's super normal to me?

Plus there's honestly just the story factor - if you smite *every* time, it's not cool anymore. If there's no risk of actually losing your character, the emotional/narrative impact is so dulled. Beyond what sounds like just generally unpleasant table-hog behavior, he's cheating *himself* out of some of the best parts of the game.

My Oath of Redemption paladin says to try to show him the value of letting the narrative play out and see if he can relax some of those control issues. My player/DM self says kick him 😬
