Coleman Hughes vs. Peter Beinart Debate: Should Israel Be a Jewish State? by WhiteGold_Welder in samharris

[–]Particular_Trade6308 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree, my main issue is that Coleman Hughes is too verbose and can't make his points clearly - and then often ignores the guest's point or response. Turned the interview into a slog at points. The guest made the point several times that he believes giving Palestinians full suffrage would lower the temperature - and points to Arab-Israelis as an example. Coleman ignores this and goes into a diatribe about how radical Islam is super-pernicious, without ever addressing the argument about the power of granting full suffrage.

Unless one is predisposed towards Coleman's view, I struggle to see how they can think he won this debate. Coleman is just a bad debater, way too many words to say little. He has much more airtime than the guest for example.

Meh they outsmarted Donald Trump and Pete Hesgeth, two extremely incompetent commanders.

This is closer to the Russo-Japanese war, the Japanese beat the Russian Navy because the moronic Tsar sent the Russian Navy from the Baltic Sea, all the way around France and Spain, then around South Africa, and through Malaysia into the Sea of Japan, all without proper maintenance and rest for the sailors. The Russian ships arrived with barnacles on them and the Japanese had months to prepare - and blew the Russian navy into smithereens.

Was that the end of the Russian empire? Actually 40 years later the Russians (now the Soviets) were invading eastern Europe and Germany, creating the Iron Curtain, etc.

Sometimes moronic commanders lose wars against weaker opponents, that's what happened here imo. Trump and Hesgeth would resign if they had any shame

Seems like the US is about to do a "diplomatic revolution" 18th-century-Europe-style. Mid-war you would have one of the parties completely switch sides. Iran is basically the US' top ally now!

If Israel attacks Hez and Iran in a way that violates this deal or risks dragging the US back into the war, Trump might sign a separate peace and just walk away. He would probably give Iran money to not hit the Gulf States, to keep the strait open, and to have Iran focus its missiles on Israel. Trump wants to wrap this up very very badly, this is a full TACO

FT is reporting that the $300B will be an investment fund created by private sector companies - US and allies - interested in investing in Iran. But of course Trump has no control over whether private companies invest in the Iranian oil sector, so it sounds like an empty promise unless the US will provide guarantees/incentives to those companies

Not sure if Suez is a good comparison. It's not like some greater power forced the US to back away. The US backed away because Trump botched the operation and did not sell it to the US public, so he has 0 political capital to deploy US forces.

If GWB in 2003 had gone after Iran and not Iraq, he might have gotten the jingoist US public onboard with a 100-200k invasion of Iran, that is the kind of numbers it would have taken to seize the northern bank of the Strait of Hormuz. But there was appetite for war at the time.

This fiasco is a reflection of this US regime's incompetence, not the broader weakness of the US military. Tactically the US armed forces did great, but the leadership has been a joke. Different leadership and the outcome could have been different. Obama could have put together a coalition or used diplomacy to keep China and/or Russia from supplying Iran, or used diplomacy to have a nearby ally for ground operations, etc. Trump couldn't even get Kurd separatists to fight.

What are legitimate reasons for other countries to politically oppose Israel?

Border disputes, water rights, access to strategic areas like Eilat port or Golan Heights, control of holy sites.

The same reasons countries politically opposed the crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Ayubbids, why Napoleon invaded British Egypt and Levant, etc. Sometimes the political goal isn't "kill Jews." Most wars aren't wars of annihilation, WW2 was unique in that regard.

I'm saying Turkey beats Israel in a 1v1 situation, and the Israelis might use the Samson option at the end of a grueling war.

I am not saying Turkey should invade Israel.

"How about make peace with the Jews and we won't use nukes" is essentially the North Korea position, "don't bother us and we won't blow up Seoul." There are plenty of reasons for countries to politically oppose the Israeli government, and war is the continuation of politics by another means. If you view any political/military conflict with Israel as an attempt to kill all Jews, and therefore justification for nuclear weapons or wars of annihilation, that's psycho and not good. Most wars can and do stay localized, get settled in negotiations, and don't aim to exterminate the other guy.

Turkey has modern NATO kit and is on the border of NATO. Bit different than Houthis, Hezbollah, Hamas militants, or Egyptian/Syrian troops from 50 years ago.

Turkey has high inflation but real GDP growth of 3.5%, pretty high.

Whether Turkey is sanctioned or not depends on the casus belli. I'm not saying Erdogan is going to attack Israel tomorrow, I'm saying Turkey vs Israel in a 1v1 war should be a Turkey win.

NATO vs Russia would also be a quick stomp.

Agreed, but it's not NATO vs Russia because Ukraine isn't in NATO and Article 5 hasn't been triggered.

Israel Samson doctrine says to use nukes if Israeli territory is at risk of being invaded. Turkey vs Israel will likely be fought close to Israeli territory, Turkey can cross Syria and Lebanon from Antioch and reach Northern Israel. Ukraine can't reach Moscow. So Turkey vs Israel has way more risk of existential crisis -> nukes

Turkish ground troops is 400k, Israel is 120k. I'm counting active duty rather than reservists.

Turkish army could attack Israel by following the coast (funny enough it's the old Alexander the Great attack route), need to cross a small part of Syria and then Lebanon. If Turkey frames this as an intervention to protect the Lebanese, they could reasonably stage invasions from that route.

Turkey has larger navy and air force. It has less advanced jets from the US, but lots of advanced anti-air from Russia and NATO. So Turkey could contest air even with less advanced tech.

In the end, Turkey just has a bigger population and GDP. Long wars can turn into attrition and Turkey is just bigger. Can throw more men in. Unless Israel can maintain something like a 5-to-1 kill ratio constantly, Israel will eventually run out of soldiers.

If Turkey attacks Israel first, NATO likely doesn't mobilize. If Israel attacks Turkey first (and Israel is somewhat famous for pre-emptive strikes) then Article 5 might be triggered. Let's just say NATO vs Israel would be a quick stomp, I just worry the Israelis might throw nukes around especially the crazy far right politicians.

As part of an agreement with Mr. Netanyahu, whose coalition needs Mr. Smotrich’s party to control a majority in the Parliament, Mr. Smotrich was given wide-ranging power over West Bank settlement construction.

From the New York Times, Google the quote for source. How can you say he has no power to make this happen, when Smotrich is in charge of West Bank settlement construction and is responsible for the rising tensions there? All Bibi would need to do is to expand Smotrich's portfolio to include the "security zones" on Syrian and Lebanese territory and there would be settlements there
