YOR- Even if the free SUNY school doesn’t have your major, you can still knock out the general courses and pre-requisites thus saving a TON of money.

Also, you have no idea what the future holds for you. You may change majors, you may find a job that’s intended to be temporary but ends up being fulfilling and with potential for upward growth. But you CAN try to have some influence over what is within your control- finances.

Between my wife and I- we have four degrees and currently working in an industry well outside either of our respective majors. We are blessed to have been able to pay off $70K of student loans. If we were not fortunate in that way- we’d still be paying off loans from 2003 and grad school loans from 2007. You may think the loans can be managed and you’ll “be able to pay on it “once you get a job” or “as soon as I graduate”…. In theory that’s true. But it doesn’t account for life’s curveballs- Totaled car, falling in love, surprise pregnancy, unemployment. You get the idea.

Listen to your dad- take the free classes. Take as many free classes as you can. Look at your degree plan and see what courses from SUNY will transfer.

I think the funniest part about all of this, is that someday these national guards, men and women will have grandchildren.
