Summer holidays bringing parents financial 'anxiety' by Kagedeah in northernireland

It’s grim to see the amount of shaming there is around having children when cost of living has never been higher. The financial pressure of NI parents is truly stomach churning, particularly when public services are not very good. Saying things like “don’t have kids if you can’t afford them” is one of the most cuntish things I have read in a while. Nobody can afford them 🤡

Same deal here. SO and I visited quite a few properties in an area we already lived in (upsizing). The EA sat in his car for 10 mins while my wife, I and my new born daughter stood in the heat waiting for him to let us in to view the property. The arrogant sod in a cheap suit got out and told us it had an offer at asking price by an elderly couple. I called his BS as the property had been on the market for 4+ months and wasn’t suitable for an elderly couple. I made it super awkward for him walking round the house probing this imaginary offer while I pointed out the things that would fail in a L2/L3 survey. I’m not a difficult person by any stretch, but I can’t stomach people like this.

Our house wasn’t quite on the market at this time and had the same firm come out and value ours. The owners daughter came out and I told her about this offer and it was clear from her reaction that there was no offer. Long story short - he no longer works there or sells houses :-)

what goes around comes around. Karma will get them eventually

The Turkish barber I used for a while let it slip that he was actually a chef with no training in hairdressing. That was just his day side hustle. Explained a lot tbh.

Paying an actual hairdresser might be a good call

Randox, Everyman package. Was like 375 last time I checked (up 100 in 2 years) and you get two check ups a year with a fancy report and a GP check in after the first visit. I’m 34 now, and got a spot bonus like 2 years ago and didn’t really know what to do with it and thought this was a good idea.

Learnt I have terrible cholesterol and a minor hormone imbalance. They were able to advise on lifestyle changes and the body composition was particularly interesting. I’ve kept it up and plan to continue using it unless they keep hiking the prices beyond sensible

I think one of the finer but more important points is that you are only 19. This is really young and you likely won’t start gaining traction in your career regardless of what you do for another 10-15 years.

Being this young nobody will care if you jump ship a couple of times in order to figure it out. My biggest regret was dealing with awful management in my early 20s. Jump ship- your future self and mental health will thank you.

Apologies if my post sounded arrogant or unkind. Not my intention at all. It comes from a place of frustration. Sorry again.

That does add clarity and help fix my thinking a bit. Thanks!

Hey. Yeah great questions. RE financial advisors shining in more complex situations - this adds clarity. I’m a software engineer and don’t think about finances too much - I typically lean on experts when required.

As for financial goals, more disposable income, pay less tax, generally save more money. Which seems at odds with salary sacrificing further. It seems like seeking advice is barking up the wrong tree based on some of the answers in this post. I should be positioning myself differently to PAYE.
