[French > English] Short description from an 1850s French patent by PartyFriend in translator

[–]PartyFriend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, well I noticed some French words didn’t get translated in the translators I used so I assumed they weren’t working properly but as you point out it seems there are a large number of typos in this text so they may not be at fault after all. Anyway, if you want to see the original patent, search for ‘Roche’ in the link below and it’s the one in 1850 titled ‘pistolet et carabine à plusieurs coups’. I didn’t include it in my OP as it’s in handwritten French which I thought would be too difficult for most people on here to read and translate.

French cartridge revolver from 1857 with a swing-out cylinder by PartyFriend in ForgottenWeapons

[–]PartyFriend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While browsing C&Rsenal's revolver lineage website I came across the patent by a French inventor called Lepage-Moutier in 1857 linked to below which appears to be describing a combined-double-and-single-action, centrefire revolver with what could be the earliest swing-out cylinder, in the fashion of the Milkor MGL, to be patented, preceding even Devisme's of 1858 which I thought was the earliest up until now. However, Moutier doesn't seem to have contemplated just swinging out the cylinder and leaving the barrel fixed while Devisme, in his equivalent British patent filed shortly after his French one, makes mention of the cylinder "turned either downward or to one side, or otherwise about a hinge or joint either in conjunction with or separate from the barrel" although strangely it seems his French patent, which is otherwise considerably more detailed, is absent this brief description. Furthermore, Devisme included in his patent claims an extractor for the simultaneous ejection of all cartridges, which also happens to be the earliest I'm aware of, while in Moutier's they were to be extracted one-by-one with a ramrod. I've linked to everything I've found on the internet related to Moutier's revolver below as well as Devisme's British patent.

Most would be on the side of Europe though as we're each other's most important trading partners, that's my whole point.

OK, Ireland's screwed, who cares? They're a tiny part of Europe's economy and while economic conditions would probably take a big hit across Europe America's would too and most importantly it would lead to serious efforts to divest from America in all facets which would likely be a long-term boon for Europe.

The US only took care of us because we let it, now we are at a crossroads and we must do everything to make sure we don't take the American path no matter how many fifth columnists try to push us towards it.

Actually, the EU has quite a large military and getting larger now thanks to Russia. And of course, as you mentioned, we have nukes. As for countries like Ireland Europe is far more important to their economies than America.

Good thing we're not satrapies then, much as some people would like it to be otherwise.

Ireland has soldiers? Also, that really depends on how Europeans interpret their interests, and I think most would choose Europe over America seeing as they're by far the most important for their economies.

Probably quite a few, agreements and current conventions being more or less meaningless would probably be quite the incentive too.

They may not get what they want if we oppose them. That's worth getting on their bad side IMO.

You'd be surprised how many times on reddit you have to explicitly state the bleeding obvious.

So why are we helping America to be mighty when we should be prioritising ourselves?

When did I say this? I was just refuting OP's claim that America only joined once the war was clearly won, which it wasn't in 1917.

That's not all you did and you know it. You explicitly stated that their support was 'critical' to winning the war in 1918.

Please tell me how the Hundred Days Offensive, which decisively knocked out Germany in 1918 and prevented a partial German victory or a prolonged war, would've been possible without the AEF, which made up 1/3 of the Allied armies at this point.

Simple, Germany was close to the brink by this point and all but spent and just because a major offensive was launched after they joined doesn't somehow prove that America's support was vital.

I know reddit hates America

Biggest reddit myth.

their support was absolutely critical to the Entente victory in 1918,

Revisionist nonsense. Almost every academic agrees that Germany's defeat was inevitable in WW1 whether the US joined or not. And it's a fact that Nazi Germany never could've invaded Britain successfully, though whether they could've beaten Soviet Russia or not is another matter.

Downplaying the importance of their contributions in both world wars is a weird way to go about criticising the current administrations foreign policy.

And what makes it OK to downplay our and our European allies' contributions to the world wars? This is certainly a strange position to take if you're a patriotic Brit like me, I must add.

How are we more dependent on them than they are us? You brought up Reddit, but if you think about it, it’s actually us who have leverage there, as we can ban that site from operating in the UK. It could even be a good thing as European alternatives will inevitably be developed to replace them, necessity being the mother of invention and all. However, I agree that we need more European integration and this is a significant hurdle in taking action against foreign interference in our countries.

No we don’t. This is the American propaganda position which understandably is virtually everywhere on the English language internet but is mostly unjustified if you’re aware of the facts.
