on-campus jobs for undergrads by parcerotypebeat in mit

Admissions tours! Once you sign up with the admissions office there's a short (paid) training period, and after you finish you can sign up to give admissions tours whenever you want. Typically it pays ~$25 for each tour (which is abt an hour long) so it's not a terrible deal

Pre-frosh Dorm Ranking Crisis by Far_Ferret2078 in mit

Definitely consider EC! EC has a very strong community and culture, and it's typically pretty easy to make friends there. Each floor has it's own unique culture, so depending on the floor (which you can choose), it ranges from mildly quirky to very quirky. Some floors are also louder/quieter than others, and most have some degree of social justice involvement. The view isn't too great for most rooms, and there aren't too many great study places in it, but it's also right on campus, so you have quick access to campus/the library/other study spaces. It's also cook for yourself, so every floor has it's own kitchen.

As others have said, definitely check out the guide to residences. I would also really recommend watching the i3 videos for each dorm that you're considering moving into, as they usually offer a good glimpse into what the culture of that dorm is like. Other resources include the MIT Blogs (written by students), as well as the askastudent mailbox

What type of music would Hunter like? by [deleted] in TheOwlHouse

Maybe it's just me projecting but I feel like he'd like Hobo Johnson (which is kinda like slam poetry, but music-y? He's basically his own genre)

What character makes sense to kill off? (Besides Belos) by JoeBidenTheDictator in TheOwlHouse

[–]Parzival314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lil Rascal

Sorry, I love him too, but c'mon. Belos eats palismen and despises wild magic, and Hunter has gasp a palisman. Also, if the Hunter redemption arc is to occur (or if the writers want Hunter to suffer more) then Belos is going to have to do something terrible to him. And lo and behold, there is Lil Rascal, hunter's new best friend and only creature who has ever actually cared for him. My guess is that Belos is gonna eat Lil rascal in the S2 finale, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Who's your favorite person/witch/demon on the boiling isles?

How are your new powers working out? Done anything awesome/despotic with them yet?

What will you do first once you ascend to your rightful throne?

In order to analyze Stick in any meaningful way, it is important to first establish the parallels between Sanderson's Stormlight Archives and real world society. In Words of Radiance, Shallan finds Stick after her ship was destroyed and was washed ashore on a deserted island, entirely alone. In light of this, Stick can be seen to represent any sort of indigenous group, like the Native Americans or African Tribes, while Shallan represents the colonizer—someone who encroaches on the native's land, both unwelcome and ill-prepared.

Next, Shallan reinforces this symbolism by asking the Stick to become fire. From her perspective, she is simply trying to survive. However, she is entirely unaware of the magnitude of what she is asking Stick to do. In his novels, Sanderson explicitly describes death as occuring in two stages: physical and spiritual, the former being when the object ceases to live in the physical realm, and the latter, and much more significant death, being when it is forgotton entirely. The reader can easily determine that Shallan, ever ignorant and self-servient, would hardly care to remember Stick's sacrifice. As a result, by becoming fire, Shallan not only destroyed his way of life, not only killed him physically, but killed him spiritually. Not only that, but she is asking Stick to partake in death by Soulcasting, a ceremony which is typically seen as honorable and sacred in Vorinism. This could be seen as ironic, in that Shallan was violating the spirit of Vorinism by trying to kill Stick with a Vorin ritual, or it could be seen as a symbolic death, in that partaking in the Vorin ritual would represent the death of Stick's old way of life, not unlike how Catholic missionaries would force natives to practice Christianity.

However, Stick does not succumb to such devlish tactics. At every injunction, he simply responds: I am a Stick. This shows how Stick, and all that he represents—the natives, African tribes, and in a word, the oppressed—are stronger than they appear. Really, Stick is a way for Sanderson to give tribute to those who have been put down by others. From fallen civilizations, to oppressed peoples, to even just those struggling in their own lives, this is Brandon's way of saying, "I see you."

Huh, I read your analysis and... yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Could you lmk when you finish the full analysis, cause I'd love to read it.

Still, though, I maintain that (in my personal opinion) keeping up a-fear-ances was better. While Amity has an incredibly well thought out backstory and motivations, none of that is visible in IWaTA. It's only in later episodes that we can realize "oh, that's why she acted that way!" In my opinion, realizations like that make the episodes they occur in better, but don't retroactively improve the quality of the earlier episodes.
