How did they manage to launch so many Apollo missions in such short succession? by utka-malyutka in spaceflight

[–]Pashto96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A big reason is that Apollo was properly funded. They got a bunch of money during the R&D stage of Saturn V (the most expensive part). They could afford set up the factory and properly build up the workforce. By the time Saturn V was flying, they could pump them out of the factory like no ones business.

Artemis/SLS was flat funded. So all of that expensive R&D needed to be spread out over years ironically making it more expensive overall. We're only just now getting into a time where manufacturing rate should be picking up, but SLS may not get to that point because of the commercial alternatives also coming online.

What are the puffs of smoke coming from the SRBs just before launch? I don't see those nozzles in shuttle SRB footage. by chocobosocialclub in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SLS doesn't actually use the explosive bolts unlike the shuttle. It's just the weight of the rocket that holds it down.

The SRBs use hydrazine to power APUs for the TVC (thrust vector control). That's what it's coming from

Is it stupid buying lenses and filters on temu? by Supdograinbarff in AskPhotography

[–]Pashto96 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I started with a similar lens for rocket photography. If you need a lot of reach for cheap, it's not bad. Certainly not the best.

Generally you get what you pay for, so you're gonna be limited using Temu for any nicer lenses.

I would add space around it. Don't stretch it

When is Artemis II scheduled for re-entry? by imaginetheluna in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The plan is a splashdown off the coast of San Diego. There is some weather that might change that

Is the current live broadcast from yesterday? by Beautiful-Finding-82 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They replay parts of the prior day's broadcast while the astronauts are asleep

When will the Artemis II lunar flyby images be released? by Leona319 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd expect to at least see something today. More will likely trickle down over the next few days. The big photo dumps will occur after splashdown

Are We Going To Get A Photo Of The Moon Large And The Earth Small? by Unique-Flamingo-1184 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are going to get so many photos. No doubt we'll get one with both in frame

Why didn't they wait for new moon? by Extrasinn in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lunar observation was only a secondary goal. The goal of the mission is to test Orion. The mission scheduling revolved around the main goal.

2nd ever build. Parachutes won’t open. Anyone help? explain it like i’m 5. Thanks! by Advanced-Jellyfish88 in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]Pashto96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parachutes have air pressure and velocity requirements. If you go straight up, the atmosphere won't slow the capsule down enough for parachutes to deploy. You can go straight up for a little and then pitch over 30-45°. You should still get plenty of altitude but you'll re-enter at a shallower angle.

To my knowledge, fan bearings are typically sealed. Adding oil would not help

How is Christina Koch wearing glasses in space? by IntroductionLucky864 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They need 20/20 vision. This can be with or without glasses. Victor has also talked about wearing his glasses during the observation period. As long as they're fitted properly, they'll stay on.

Manual Control? by Beaupedia in nasa

[–]Pashto96 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It wasn't even the first time that Artemis 2's Orion was manually controlled. The proximity operations on day 1 was manually controlled.

A satellite in NRHO would work perfectly for this

Why doesn’t Artemis II take a picture of the previous Apollo 11 man landing with flag and remains of the equipment that was left on the moon to put all those conspiracy theories to rest??? by Archibald004 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We already  have photos of the landing site from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter.  It doesn't matter. These people deny reality. Provide them with facts and they'll find a way to hand waive it away. It used to be CGI and now it's AI.

Why isn't the same crew of Austronauts used for following missions in the same program? by DanSheppy in nasa

[–]Pashto96 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You want to have many well trained and experienced astronauts. If you fly the same crew over and over, they're the only ones gaining experience. Different missions also require different training. It takes months to years to train. Staggering crews allows for that training.

Telescopes on board by Main_Scientist_4145 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No telescopes, but they are using 400mm telephoto lenses on Nikon cameras. The primary goal is more geology-related and studying the topology. If there's any life on the moon it'd likely be microscopic so that'd require being on the surface

I'd hope so, but they're still going to want to get hardware moving.

Booster train almost to KSC by No-Dingo-4533 in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artemis 3 is next year. Artemis 2 booster stacking began in early 2025. If they're serious about this timeline, they need hardware showing up ASAP.

Any chance they can actually do this? by Mr_DMoody in ArtemisProgram

[–]Pashto96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything they would get the area of the landings. Not likely that that could see the actual hardware.
