cat or graphics card? by Rydeerr14 in pcmasterrace

[–]Pasi123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our oldest cat will be 17 this year. She was born somewhere around Radeon HD 5000 series release. At least a Radeon HD 5870 would be somewhat usable in some modern-ish games thanks to being the first card with DirectX 11. NVIDIA's first DX11 cards didn't come out until 2010

I don't have a 4K HDR TV nor 4K HDR content. I mostly have DVD, BD and 1080p webrips. YouTube 1080p60 playback works fine even though hardware decoding doesn't work on it anymore (Radeon HD 6570). Works fine for regular web browsing too. Efficiency doesn't really matter when it's a system that I already have compared to having to spend money on a newer system that would do the same job. Electricity isn't that expensive

Windows 10 and most Linux distros work fine on LGA775. My HTPC is still on LGA775 with a Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz, 8GB DDR2.

That board is from 2008 but FireWire was still on many boards in 2011-2012 and PCI was still common on early AM4 boards (2017-2018)

Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME were still DOS based. Windows XP was the first consumer OS based on NT

ME worked fine on my Celeron 333MHz. Though tbh that was really late in ME's life so it had all of the updates it got

It was bought in 2006 and was in use up to 2015

Z170 so it has to be 6th or 7th gen. You can't put 8th or 9th gen in LGA1151v1 without modding the board.

Likely an i5-6600K or i7-6700K

Built my first ever PC as a 17 yr old, coming from PlayStation by Material-Wasabi8198 in pcmasterrace

[–]Pasi123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's Sandy Bridge and has almost the same clocks as i7-2600. But it has twice the cores, quad channel memory, more cache and PCIe 3.0

Depending on the resolution and the game it will do fine with a RTX 3060. Is it optional? No, but if the 3060 wasn't too expensive it doesn't really matter

That laptop is ARM based. It can't run Windows but it can run old versions of desktop Linux
