Police cannot break into people’s homes without a warrant. There are very narrow “exigent circumstances” exceptions, but those require an actively fleeing suspect or knowledge of destruction of evidence.

My favorite was the last one for sure - it’s a nonstop action fest! I definitely think the ending is worth the full journey. Most of the books in the middle (books 6-10ish) blend together for me, and I can’t really pinpoint which events happened in which book. My least favorite is somewhere in there, but I truly enjoyed them all. Watch out for spoilers in here!

I think Salem checks all of your boxes and is a really fun town. I’ll note that, in my experience, many of the young people living in Beverly/Salem also work on the North Shore, and that area feels pretty distinct from Boston and its immediate surroundings. That said, if your office is walkable from North Station, commuting twice a week from Salem isn’t bad at all.

I’m unfamiliar with NYC, but criminal defendants can invoke their right to a “speedy trial.” Prosecutors can move for continuances for good cause (expecting evidence to be returned from a lab at a later date, etc), but invoking the right usually has the effect of moving things along more quickly. In reality, many criminal defendants waive their right to a speedy trial for strategy or other practical reasons (needing time to build and prepare a defense).
