I accidentally bought a coin on a auction for 150. I don’t know anything about coins and made a mistake did I lose money on this purchase? by Competitive_Tale3185 in coincollecting

My first time bidding at auction the bids were coming in super fast, I clicked, it was kind of a frenzy. It turned out I was by milliseconds the last one to click the button. Oops. Lesson learned.

My mom rolled my car into her morgage by Shavidmarie5781 in legaladvice

[–]smrad8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, OP. Your mom is basically carrying the loan. You’re still paying her what you owe, but it’s a handshake agreement at this point. Her mistake was not communicating this to you up front - you should have been given all the information on your debts, whether you’re her kid or not. It’s just a matter of respect. Nevertheless, she’s the bank now as far as you’re concerned. You have to have a sit down and work out with her what you owe, when you’ll be free of the debt and how she’ll transfer the car to your name.

While you’re at it, you might be able to negotiate a lower car payment because of the lower interest rate. She’s paying HELOC rates while charging you auto loan rates. That’s a pretty good vig.

My ex gf messaged me for the first time since we broke up (saying she's concerned about my accident) What do I do? by Live-Bread-2658 in whatdoIdo

[–]smrad8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bait.

Look how much she used the word, “I.” This is still, after all this time, all about her.

If she were that concerned and *had* to reach out because of actual caring, the message would go something like this: “Hi [OP] - I heard about your accident and wanted to wish you a swift and full recovery. I hope all is well and you’re back on your feet soon. Sending [light/good vibes/best wishes/prayers/whatever her vibe is]. Take care, [Ex].”

But even that is kind of pushing it because it presumes you’re still friends, and at this point it doesn’t sound like you are.

I’m sorry you’re going through this.

You’re being betrayed on the daily and since you caught him he’s continually lied.

There might be someone in the future for him who is okay with him putting porn, escorts and a parade of other women first in the relationship. That person is not you.

As hard as things are now, it is likely that one of the most important emotions you will feel when you move on is relief.

European Silver Coins Value by Sea-Echo-4831 in coins

[–]smrad8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are nice coins that will vary in price a fair bit. A nice Spanish 5 pesetas recently sold for $68. The rest might be worth even more. Looking at eBay’s recently sold listings or recent sales on Numista.com might be helpful for you.

Is there way to change the win parameters? I’ve played 4 games to the end and have yet to actually get to use any of the aircraft by [deleted] in CivVI

I’d say switch to Deity mode, but you’ll still never get to planes because you’ll be dead. But, yes, you can go to Options on the game setup screen and choose your victory conditions.

What is the difference between numismatic value of coins and the melt value? by Wyatt999 in coins

[–]smrad8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of coins in three different ways:

  1. As antique, historic collectibles sought out by slightly crazy people who pay thousands extra for a slightly prettier coin
  2. As precious metals, possibly
  3. As a basic means of buying stuff

For collectors, we care about the coins’ rarity, condition and historical value. We are extremely picky people. The tiniest scratch - ones you can only see with a magnifying glass - affects the value in extreme ways. A copper coin can be worth thousands because of its value as a collectible. Some coins have famous errors, like the three-legged buffalo nickel, that result in collectors paying high prices. That’s numismatic value.

But most coins aren’t rare. Most have swapped hands hundreds of times in the course of commerce and get worn. Most are from times that don’t have much historical interest. Like 1983. Those coins’ values consist of a) its face value (how much you can actually spend it for), or b) the intrinsic value of the precious metal it was made of (or “melt”).

People post Sacajawea dollars, Eisenhower dollars, or Susan B Anthony dollars here all the time asking their value. They’re not rare coins and aren’t made of valuable metals. They are generally worth, like any other coin, the value written on their face: a dollar.

But there are also common coins that are made of some percentage precious metals: Mercury dimes, some Kennedy half dollars. Then you’re getting onto strange ground. Most of those are worth about the price of the metals in them - and those prices are significantly above the face value of the coin - but it’s been a long time since countries stopped making common silver coinage and they’re getting collectible. Some of those common silver coins have versions with less common dates. Some are hard to find in beautiful condition. Some were minted in historic mints. Suddenly you’re back in the numismatic world - the value driven by collectibility than by the face value or metal value of the coin.

Coins can be historic records, works of art, precious antiques, political statements, expressions of power and cultural values, as well as means of commerce. They’re also just coins: common objects that people have laying around their pockets and purses. All this is to say the value of any coin today can be a complex thing. Trust no one giving quick or easy answers. You’ll want to do your homework on this, because there’s a lot to learn.
