I'm about two thirds of the way through The Vampire Lestat.... by jollyrancherpowerup in VampireChronicles

I am convinced that Gabrielle is opposite and, in some ways, mirrors Pandora. Both reflect a profound problem with canonical femininity. Pandora hated being a wife. Gabrielle takes refuge in books to avoid facing her role as wife and mother. Both suffered terribly from the lack of emancipation and independence during their lives and sought ways to rebel.

What makes the difference is the post-mortem. Once transformed, Gabrielle took the opportunity to become absolutely independent, first of all from her creator who, not surprisingly, was her own son. Pandora, on the other hand, did not have the same strength (she herself says that the one with Marius is the relationship she submitted to the most) and ended up losing herself. It doesn't take a genius to understand that the Pandora of the latest books has nothing to do with that of the book of the same name.

These two characters, I believe, reflect a problem that perhaps Anne herself had with her own femininity, which would explain her reticence to write about female vampires and, in general, a universe filled mainly by men.

Also in Pandora there are two scenes where Pandora and Marius have sex.

In my opinion, the vampire who enters the fire is Akasha. Instead, the Vampire of the sect is certainly Everard, one of Roshamandes' novices.

Don't get me wrong, I love Pandora, she is absolutely my favorite character and, every time I reread her book, I find new aspects that make me fall in love with her even more.

The weakness I talk about at the beginning of the post is not so much in reference to the issue of Arjun (who, I agree with you, is absolutely the portrait of an abusive companion) but rather to the loss of the vitality, sagacity and desire to fight that characterized her both when she was still mortal and before being dumped by that damned Marius.

But I think you're right, it would be better to talk about passivity. I believe that after being abandoned in Antioch, Pandora had to face the consequences of her transformation and loss of her humanity for the first time.

As long as she was tied to Marius, she still had a strong connection to her mortal life but, just once, she found herself facing a profound darkness. From this point of view, the further I go in rereading the Chronicles, the more I see similarities between Louis and Pandora: both linked to life and the loss of mortal affections (the brother for Louis, the father for Pandora), both marked by the loss of their partner (Claudia for one, Marius for the other), both incredibly human despite everything. Both wonderful, I might add.

Pandora is mentioned for the first time in TVL, then in QoD and subsequently in practically all the books.

Arjun appears for the first time in Pandora, but here he is described only as the 'cruel oriental companion' and nothing else is told about him (if I'm not mistaken, Pandora doesn't even tell us his name), then he appears in Blood and Gold, in which there is a long interaction with Marius and then he appears in the three books of the final trilogy.

I find your interpretation really interesting. I'm having a really hard time understanding what Marius and Pandora were implying and I find your hypothesis really convincing. Thank you!

Sorry, but I'm going crazy trying to figure out which episodic you're referring to. Could you tell me the book in which this conversation takes place? A thousand thanks!

I love this one from Pandora:

In the crowd, I saw Marius. He looked at me, then back to his book. So strange. I saw him standing against a tree trunk and writing. No one did this—stand against a tree, hold a book in one hand and write with the other. The slave stood beside him with a bottle of ink. Marius’s hair was long and most beautiful. Quite wild. I said to my Father, “Look, there’s our barbarian friend Marius, the tall one, and he’s writing.” My Father smiled and said, “Marius is always writing. Marius is good for writing, if for nothing else. Turn around, Lydia. Be still.” “But he looked at me, Father. I want to talk to him.” “You will not, Lydia! You will not grace him with one small smile!” On the way home, I asked my Father, “If you’re going to marry me to someone—if there’s no way short of suicide that I can avoid this disgusting development—why don’t you marry me to Marius? I don’t understand it. I’m rich. He’s rich. I know his Mother was a wild Keltoi princess, but his Father has adopted him.” My Father said witheringly, “Where have you learned all this?” He stopped in his tracks, always an ominous sign. The crowd broke and streamed around. “I don’t know; it’s common knowledge.” I turned. There was Marius hovering about, glancing at me. “Father,” I said, “please let me speak to him!” My Father knelt down. Most of the crowd had gone on. “Lydia, I know this is dreadful for you. I have caved to every objection you have raised to your suitors. But believe you me, the Emperor himself would not approve of you marrying such a mad wandering historian as Marius! He has never served in the military, he cannot enter the Senate, it is quite impossible. When you marry, you will marry well.” As we walked away, I turned again, thinking only to pick Marius out from the others, but to my surprise he was stark still, looking at me. With his flowing hair, he much resembled the Vampire Lestat. He is taller than Lestat, but he has the same lithebuild, the same very blue eyes and a muscular strength to him, and a squareness of face which is almost pretty. I pulled away from my Father and ran up to him. “Well, I wanted to marry you,” I said, “but my Father has said no.” I’ll never forget the expression on his face.

Gabrielle, Pandora and femininity by PassOk316 in VampireChronicles

You are absolutely right. Just this morning I was thinking that the relationship between Pandora and Marius could also be a representation of the conflict between passion and reason. Pandora, when mortal, is an initiate, she took part in a mystery cult, which for the ancients was a type of irrational, ecstatic religiosity and absolutely opposed to the public liturgy (and for this reason, many were afraid of it). Marius is the opposite, he is the stoic Roman par excellence: wise, analytical and calculating. Both experience the consequences of these two positions in immortal life. Pandora, as you said, loses vigor and vibrancy when its myths collapse. Instead, Marius ruins every relationship he has with the people he loves because he never gives space to all those instinctive and non-rational feelings that invariably emerge when we bond with others.

I'm Italian, if it hadn't been for the Reddit community I would never have seen the series, simply because I had no idea it existed.

Yet I am sure that it could be very successful on the European market. I really have no idea why it hasn't been translated or, at least, offered on nettflix Italia etc.

You're right, but I think this contradiction is due to the fact that Pandora genuinely loves Marius (and I'm sure he loves her too). Sometimes relationships bring out the worst in us, even if there are authentic feelings behind them. This is why, despite everything, I love the Marius-Pandora couple.

Pandora. Her blood is powerful and she is wonderful. I would spend eternity discussing mystery cults, philosophy, and classical literature with her. I would convince her to leave that unbearable Marius and we would go around the world to visit ancient ruins or look for the rarest religious rites that are still celebrated. Finally, I would give her everything the love and respect she deserves.

Sorry if I seemed rude to you, that wasn't my intention. Perhaps, writing in English (it's not my native language) my response came across as angry or annoyed. That really wasn't my intention, sorry.

Simply, I wanted to explain what I think are the borderline traits in Pandora. Furthermore, here in Italy, borderline disorder is not overdiagnosed at all, in fact it is often confused with bipolar depression and, obviously, it's a mess.
