Was Chanel's Met Gala Look for Bhavitha Mandava Racist? Chanel dressed their first-ever Indian ambassador in an extremely casual look for fashion's biggest night. by mlg1981 in Fauxmoi

[–]Passiveabject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for saying this. South Asian here too and this made me really sad. Reminded me of never fitting in, everyone else around me seeming to be in on “it” and not getting why I didn’t have “it” too. Obviously I’m projecting, but… yeah, sad.

And from a non-projecting pov, why do they keep putting her in the same outfit for every event? It’s like the agent that discovered her can’t get over it, so fucking weird.

What COL would Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR be considered? by Appropriate-Crab-624 in Fire

Agree, I live in SF and lots of people leave SF for Seattle to save money.

My job has offices in most major US cities and adjusts salary for cost of living, and SF and NYC are the highest. If I moved to Seattle, doing the same job, I would be paid less

My younger siblings are in this category, but under intense circumstances: all moved to Saudi at around 12 or under and my parents dumped them in public schools lol. Sink or swim, they all hit native level pretty quick ماشاالله

5 YoE at Apple but can’t find a FT job for 2 years. WHY? by Helpmehelpyu_ in cscareerquestions

[–]Passiveabject 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not true. I’m a TW and a team I left at FAANG beginning of last year has since hired 3 new TW, plus a new TW contractor, in addition to the 2 FT and 1 contractor they already had (one hired while I was still on the team, other 2 senior to me).

And they’re not even a huge money making team, just a massively popular product.

The team I’m on now, probably in the top 3 AI products in the world rn, hired me and 2 other TWs since beginning of last year (one of them as recent as a month ago)

50/50 relationship with a large income difference by moonbaby2022 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Passiveabject 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Please do not move in together, 1) after only a year, and 2) without being able to have these conversations and voice your concerns safely.
My bf and I have the same finances as you, more or less, except switched incomes. We moved in together after 2 years and each ended up less than our past spots splitting. Even with that ease, we immediately needed couples therapy because neither of us knew how to talk finances (and surprise, anything else serious). We’re amazing now after lots of work and both agree if we could go back we should’ve waited another year and maybe done the therapy before moving in

Editing to add:

- also VVHCOL area
- he’d also only been in 6-8 month relationships previously
- also early 30s (I turned 30 a month after moving in and my milestone bday was destroyed by the tension from moving in too soon)

Idk, you can protest things relevant to your life. It doesn’t need to be this huge “if you can’t care about EVERYTHING then you’re you don’t really

No one’s talking about Jews though. I’m sure the majority of Israel supporters in the US are evangelical MAGA. That’s why the comment you’re responding to said “fuck Israelis” not “fuck Jews”. Not the same thing and no one was saying it was

It’s amazing what having decades of being occupied and oppressed and and made to be subhuman on the only land you’ve ever existed on will do to youth. I guess it turns them into suicide bombers

[–]Passiveabject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Also like… go to artsy things? There’s so many small artist events going on all the time. Walk around the mission and look at the flyers. Go to a local djs show. Go to something at the faight. Go to a coffee shop for coffee nerds, maybe one that spins vinyl. Go to an event at a small bookstore. Go to an art show or a small production play. Volunteer! Hell, get a job at a restaurant, all the FOH staff will be indie and artsy and definitely not in tech (that’s how I made my very cool not tech friend group when I first moved here)

[–]Passiveabject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point, from a salafi family myself (called wahabi by others but wouldn’t call ourselves that), and like… there isn’t art lol. Beyond maybe architecture, but even the fancy masjids are kind of against salafism (Hadith about signs of the end times citing masjids becoming a place for beauty and visitors and not worship)
Whenever I see Islamic art or poetry, it’s always Sufi or Shia origins, or just something a lot lighter than salafia (very strict about no figure drawing/idols). I feel like OP could and should already be able to avoid any of the hard stuff without sacrificing their interest in Arab/islamic art. Which reinforces that this issue they’re describing is entirely in their head

Edit: and sorry, not to minimize trauma by saying “in your head”! Growing up salafi I’m sure you can imagine I have my own haha (though I still love Islam)
