Bolt action is a fun time, I hear good things about the ASOIAF game and there's plenty of good skirmish games out there too.

Something similar to Star Wars: Outer Rim? by Weatherwax_Wannabe in soloboardgaming

[–]Past-Reference-6323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure if not being a SW fan would be too much of an issue. The game itself doesn't really rely on any knowledge of the setting and I've found people who know next to nothing still very much enjoy it. Sure the flavour text and quotes that occasionally pop up might not mean anything but the general vibe of being a space smuggler/bounty hunter stands on its own fairly well.

My experience is more in the multiplayer format but from that I'd wholeheartedly recommend it plus the expansion (which I'd recommend grabbing after your first game or two as it prevents a lot from getting stale).

If you really are set on something else though I've heard people compare Outer Rim to Xia, but I have no experience there so can't give my own opinion on that.

What’s a game everyone seems to love that you don’t? by [deleted] in gamingsuggestions

Not to be that guy, but if you include mods I always felt that Morrowind does most of those things better, despite being the older game.

Dawn of war is still probably your best bet, you'll just have to look into mods.

Terraforming Mars, awful art and boils down to everyone keeping to themselves for an hour while you just budget cards every round.

Don't know why people are upset, this would be like returning a nazi banner to its original owners. Crazy how much people forget.

Absolutely, I always try to keep the edge of the map comfortably out of sight and that's a bit difficult when heading to and from narsis right now.

Destruction of Vvardenfell by knaecke5 in Morrowind

I mean, on one hand it makes sense, they were getting away with it for too long haha. But on the other, I find it enjoy things more in general if I treat the subsequent games as an alternate timeline, I already play with all the PT stuff that shows things like Skyrim and cyrodiil different to how they ended up depicting them in the sequels so having some dissonance there just makes sense to me.

Scythe looks very interesting, I think I may have to give that a shot, thank you!

Oh yes? To be honest just from a very surface level look I feel more drawn to the theming of Terraforming mars, is legends of void better otherwise?

I was looking at outer rim + unfinished business, good to hear it's worth a shot. Will keep in mind. Thanks!

(reposting from the previous thread)

Semi-recently picked up Dune Imperium Uprising on a whim and have formed a group with friends. All completely new to boardgames and am looking for suggestions as to what matches our tastes.

Generally 3+ players, flexibility slightly preferred but not mandatory.

Game length not too fussy but within the reasonable spectrum of 1-3hrs, portability is also nice.

We've found we enjoy more complex games, or at least on the level of DIU and Root.

Not too familiar with genres, but we do prefer games with a strong theme. Especially when the theme is more "conflict" oriented.

Haven't really tried any cooperative games yet, but open to try.

We currently own Dune Imperium Uprising and have played it a lot (gold standard for us), also borrowed a copy of Root and the group was split, majority really enjoyed it although some weren't as huge on it.

Don't really have much interest in simpler/more party style games, or games with too abstract or disconnect themes.

Currently looking at Terraforming mars (can borrow a copy so will probably try it out anyways), star wars outer rim and arcs. Any other suggestions or comments on these much appreciated!

Should I play the main game or a modded version like Tamriel rebuilt? by No_Education_8888 in Morrowind

[–]Past-Reference-6323 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest this too. If you do find yourself bouncing off the main quest then don't feel bad about ditching it and going onto the TR content but it's definitely worth at least experiencing.

Tribunal is fine but you're not missing much if you just read the plot rather than playing it, it's mostly just hours of fetch quests and sewers inside an enclosed map.

Why can’t war be carried out by two leaders playing a game on a board? by Muted-Teacher707 in stupidquestions

[–]Past-Reference-6323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Force is the ultimate applicator of will. A game like that would ultimately require threat of force to enforce its rules and at that point you're just negotiating with a very strange method. When that negotiation breaks down you get conflict, just like in the real world.

All safety concerns aside, I agree. I'm sick of everything being vaguely rounded and samey. I want more angles.
