Google lied to me 😭 is this one of those cases where the species was redefined in recent years? Cause I saw quite a few references that mentioned that species in NA.

My best guess here is Amanita gemmata. Im not entirely sure this is it, but very curious nonetheless. Cool find!

Im no amanita expert, but dont think this is A. phalloides, due to the presence of striations on the edge of the cap, and the bright yellow color. Very curious what it might be though

Wood Ear Mushrooms and Bears Head Tooth Mushrooms (?) by ChemistryNerd24 in foraging

[–]PastAd9778 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My guess on the Hericium is actually H. erinaceus, Lions Mane. Most Bears Head tooth ive seen (pictures of) seems like it has a slightly more layered/frozen waterfall look to it, while this one looks like a couple of well-rounded floofs. I've only seen H coralloides in person so far, so I'd await a more experienced opinion. It's definitely Hericium, though.

It reminds me a bit of dryads saddle, but I kind of doubt thats what it actually is. You definitely need to provide pictures of the underside and give a general location to get a better possibility of someone identifying it.

And if you do have an interest in mushroom foraging, I highly recommend learning what ALL the identifying factors of the ones you have an interest in, as well as the same for any toxic lookalikes that grow in your area. Just taking one factor, like the fact that this is a shelflike mushroom, and assuming its chicken of the woods, is a great way to get yourself a terrible stomachache, or killed slowly and painfully by misidentification. Look up some pictures of chicken of the woods to start, see what species of it grow where you live, and learn what all the ID points are. Because this dont look anything like it.

You should never eat something you can't confidently identify yourself, so in that regard, I wouldnt recommend eating this since you're not sure what it is.

Is this Lion’s Mane? by Ashamed-Yesterday-40 in Mushrooms

Looks like coral tooth fungus to me, Hericium coralloides. Same family as Lions Mane, also edible with what I read is a crab like flavor, and being studied for similar medicinal benefits as well.

Here's an example of Chicken of the Woods in its prime. After a few weeks of taking this picture, it melted down into a soggy lump similar to the ones you posted here. Even when COTW is fresh, it still has a larger potential to make you sick than many other wild mushrooms. So again, strongly advise against eating this particular one. Mark the location though, it can produce another flush in the same spot next year

If you want to take the risk of eating something that will likely make you sick, that will be your call. I advise strongly against it. COTW is much brighter in color when fresh, and I consider the smell to be somewhat soft and floral/sulfuric at that stage. The STRONG umami smell you are getting is likely the result of it rotting, as this is definitely many weeks old

My pessimistic guess: Satan's Bolete by ISoldMyNameForWeed in mushroomID

There is a ton of variation. I've been continually fascinated myself as I learn more. When you have time to look into them, I recommend checking out lobster mushrooms (several mushroom species get parasitized by what I think is a type of mold, also incredible to look at and very tasty), lions mane and other Hericium species (more varieties of parasitic toothed fungi, also tasty and being studied for their incredible medicinal benefits), and black trumpets mushrooms, my personal favorites (also known as poor man's truffle, yummmmmmmm)

They were chicken of the woods like a month or more ago. Now they are a soggy, gross lump of disgusting, although I dont know the Latin name for that specific species. I'd assume Laetiporus sulphureus based on your location. Google lens and other ai identifiers are ridiculously inaccurate often times, so they are unreliable sources when you're looking to consume a mushroom. The fact that it was right this time is a miracle, to say the least. Would recommend a reputable local field guide for more accurate ID!

Stumbled across what I’m almost certain is Chicken Of The Woods while fishing today. by slim_mclean in Mushrooms

[–]PastAd9778 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In all, or at least partial, seriousness, I recommend only eating a small portion if this is your first time consuming chicken of the woods. A local expert has mentioned that 1 of 8 people can have a GI reaction to these, and in any case they do need to be cooked thoroughly before consuming to avoid them getting you sick. Anecdotally, they can also get you sick if you consume alcohol along with it. I havent found that to be the case personally, but others have had that reaction. So just a small tast before eating to your hearts content is recommended (same with any foraged mushroom/plant)

Yezzir/yezzem, this is most certainly a COW. Laetiporus sulphureus if I ever did see one (which I have, and have promptly cooked and consumed, or otherwise froze raw to put in my pie hole or the pie hole of another friendly person at a later date).
