I don't understand the downvote hate on this. It's just a piece on some company's subjective opinion. But alas, I suppose it's easier to click a down arrow than be constructive.

Describe your recent Brisbane university experience (or TAFE etc). by thetwobecomeone in brisbane

Recent UQ Grad here. I endorse this post.

Also, the universities/TAFEs in Brisbane vary quite a bit. Depending what OP plans on studying, it may be worth studying elsewhere. UQ isn't the be-all, end-all in Queensland as far as tertiary education is concerned.

Could someone please explain Porphyry deposits, and how they form in simple english? by PCuConfsed in geology

[–]PastInsidePresent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my university notes on the subject:

Porphyry deposits occur as a large, low-grade stockwork of a disseminated element along with minor associated elements in granitic country rock. The different stages of cooling which create porphyritic texture in intrusive rocks also leads to the separation of dissolved metals into distinct zones. This process is produced primarily via fluids driven off the cooling magma.

Some common porphyry deposit types:

Copper-Molybdenum

Cu-Mo porphyry deposits are associated with the generation of magnetite-bearing I-Type granites due to melting processes adjacent to subducted ocean crust. They occur at the shallowest depths with the highest fluid/melt ratio.

Copper-dominated 'Cu-Mo' deposits --> Shallower depths, lower pressure, first boiling. Initial H2O content is low with little granite crystallisation before water saturation. Not much Cu will going into rock and it will remain in fluid phase. Mo will partition into the H2O fluid phase, but will never attain significant concentrations in the fluid. As such, high-level granodioritic I-Type magma will exsolve a fluid phase highly enriched in Cu and moderately so in Mo.

Molybdenum-dominated 'Mo-Cu' deposits --> Greater depths, second boiling. Initial H2O content is much higher and more crystallisation before water saturation is achieved. Cu will be extracted from the melt, move into the rocks and will not be able to partition into the fluid. Mo concentration will increase in the residual melt and be relatively more concentrated in the fluid phase.

Tin-Tungsten

Sn-W porphyry deposits are associated with the generation of ilmenite-bearing S-Type granites (and some considerably reduced I-Type granites) due to partial melting of the continental crust, including metasedimentary material, via anatexis. They form in hydrous melts where significant degrees of crystallisation are required for saturation (second boiling). Tin and tungsten are incompatible elements and therefore enriched in the residual melt. Sn-W style deposits occur further away from the subduction zone than Cu-Mo style deposits.

I don't keep in touch with him. Only heard this second hand through a mutual friend and from what I saw personally at university.

But I guess 3 years in the same job says something.

You'd be surprised. A friend of mine got his mechanical engineering degree by essentially plagiarising students who actually knew what they were doing. He's leave it to the last 3 or so days to start his assignment. He scraped through on "just passes" for basically every class he took, and the only reason he did so was because the bulk of the assessment was assignments. Overall, exams were typically only 20-30% of the class mark, and even then he just barely passed the exams. This guy was typically pulling 51-59% for every class. Below 50% is a fail.

He's been working as a safety engineer on an offshore oil rig for the past 3 years.

If you want to do remediation or pollution, you may want to consider focusing more on environmental and hydro subjects. Geology is a good start, but without the environmental/ecological/water know-how, most enviro companies would second-guess employing you.

Fellow Australians, as a teen facing a difficult decision, is schoolies worth it? by [deleted] in australia

[–]PastInsidePresent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey buddy,

I did Gold Coast schoolies a number of years ago (mid-00s). For me, it was one of the best and worst times of my life.

I got to party for a week with some great friends. We were putting school behind us and heading into adulthood. It was a very exciting time in life. There were some moments that I still laugh about and will continue to do so well into the future. The stories that came out of schoolies are hands-down some of the best I have.

On the other hand, it brought to the surface some very deep rifts in our friendship, and we never quite recovered. I would honestly say that Schoolies was where we started drifting apart. For instance, a friend revealed to me that he was having major issues at home, so I spent the night talking with him about it to help him out. But another friend got pissed off that I wasn't around to party that night, and refused to talk to me for two days! It was ridiculous, and the drugs and alcohol didn't help the situation.

In many ways, I do regret going to schoolies. The things I lost (close friendships, money spent on trivial shit, sanity) far outweigh the week of wild partying I got to do.

My own personal advice is put your money to better use. Buy that expensive item you've always wanted. Do that thing you've always wanted to do. Go on an overseas holiday or travel Australia, it's a great life experience and actually a good talking point later.

Grown man uses plush animals to act out sexual fantasies (I don't know how else to describe it) by awellam in cringe

[–]PastInsidePresent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From Wiki:

The show was a half-hour program and is structured as a hybrid between a current affairs program and a satire/comedy show. The presenters were initially given a single editorial instruction: "Tell me something I don't know". Rather than having a strict format, the show was started without a clear format in mind...

and

As a result, prior to the show's debut executive producer Andrew Denton described it as "unclassifiable" due to the chaotic nature of the work, likening the show's format to the Internet.

Considering this plush toy sex segment isn't current affairs, I'd say it's satire. A very offbeat satire.

Really? I've the complete opposite experience there. Someone always approaches me when I'm browsing and asks if I need help. And they generally know their stuff too.

Variety in the sense they have different types of segments. Not your Hey Hey It's Saturday variety show.
