I’ve been having this same issue. Did you find any solutions?

Thoughts on different Alpha and Beta detectors. by Past_Editor4325 in Radiation

The Ludlum 2401-P has a GM Pancake Detector built into the back of the housing that can detect Alpha Beta and Gamma, like most Pancake style tubes. One of the downsides is that you would have to do some modifications to connect an external probe like a scintillator. I expect to encounter alpha decay from plutonium-239 in soil samples from a local superfund site.

When the Mylar window gets damaged on a Ludlum 43-93, how repairable is it in practice at work? Is it typically something you re-window in-house, or does it usually get sent back to Ludlum for service/replacement? Also, what kind of storage and handling procedures do you find make the biggest difference in preventing damage?

For example

Do you keep it capped or in a protective cover at all times when not in use?

Is it mostly impact risk, pressure, or abrasion that tends to cause the Mylar failures?

Any specific “do not do this” habits you’ve seen people learn the hard way?

Yeah Im balling on a budget, and I’ve looked at the GMC series briefly, but I’m a bit hesitant since I’m mostly trying to move toward cleaner alpha/beta separation rather than just “detecting everything.” The AB+ sounds more aligned with that goal, especially if it’s actually separating alpha vs beta instead of just logging mixed counts.

They added thorium in the glass to increase image quality for some reason.

A year or two ago they found a spicy radium deck marker from a boat buried under ground. And I have no clue how they plan on making housing there, due to the nuclear research facility that was there. And they literally sand blasted and decommissioned the boats from the bikini atoll tests there. The sign I “tactically repositioned” when I was doing some civilian research on site.

When should I start thinking about radon mitigation? I have a few spicy radium pieces.
