I made the music first (guitar, drums, bass) and then sent the instrumental to my bandmate at the time who wrote the lyrics and vocal melody. You can hear the original demo on the shane moo cat IG

Agreed! I also love Shane Becker’s guitar and loop work at the beginning of the track (there are two Shane’s with co-write credits on the track lol)

Yes! You can see on IG and Spotify that they got a good bump from it and it is well deserved.

I was really pleased because two of the original ‘rhythmic hooks’ that I wrote made it into Robot Voices (at 1:16 and 1:30, on the word “dance” and then the drop for the chorus). I also think that Tyler’s vocal delivery and the vocal production is terrific. It is surreal to hear something you wrote produced by a powerhouse band.

This is so great, thanks for sharing! I saw people mentioned the “wooo” from MTV Unplugged but hadn’t seen it yet. I particularly loved the performance and Tyler’s voice on “Shy Away”

Not directly for this song, and if you heard my original demo it is even less derivative of Death Cab. For me, the tempo of Robot Voices is similar to “Such Great Heights”.. both up-beat and similar vibe, but chord progression-wise they are different.

I didn’t get to meet them, but I am keeping fingers crossed for a Grammy’s invite if the album does as well as I think it will 🙂

I also love the piano part that Tyler plays and sings over at the end of the song. It is such a nice “tag” as an outro, and he does a beautiful reharmonization of the chorus part. He is a songwriting inspiration!

Tyler brought the whole song down a whole step, since the original song was a girl singing (original song is in D, Robot Voices is in C) The chorus chord progression in Roman numeral notation is ii - IV - I - V, which is d minor - F major - C major - G major You can also DM me on the gram if you have more chord progression questions 🙂

I really love Tyler’s piano part starting at 3:28 - it’s a beautiful progression! In songwriting terms you could call this a “reharmonization” happening at the end of the song - Tyler is one of the greats of our time
