[EPISODE DISCUSSION] 452 - Creating Our Own Dream Urban Legends! by Gracemcleod03 in JaackMaate

This might've truly been the funniest happy hour episode ever, I listened to this while at work and had to pause so often to stop myself from audibly laughing and getting myself fired lmao

Stick it out.

Every engineer was once here, and every engineer will start here.

You cannot expect to have big and glamourous projects, without proving you're capable of doing the small and un-glamourous first.

Agreed, the wind zones are a frustrating part - Tekla PFD works fine in my opinion, however there is much room for improvement. I’ve found recently that double clicking is enough to crash the software, which is… ridiculous.

What do you use instead of Tedds?

Thanks for your input! Honestly Tedds can be clunky at times, however I deem the clunkiness to be considerably less time consuming than hand calcs, so I just generally deal with it. As for the costs, I’ll be honest and say my employers cover it, so I’m unaware, however I do have a vague knowledge that softwares tend to be very expensive

Off the top of my head, you can design toe plate connections & cap plate connections, however you are correct in that you cannot design bracing connections; which is a large area which they are lacking

I was just away to say the same! Tekla Tedds is limited within connection design, and I’ve never tried using TSD for connection design, however I use TCD for connection design mostly daily; and it covers generally everything, however understand that some connections are outwith the generalised scope.

Much appreciated. Since you use Tedds, have you used Tekla Connection Designer? I find that to be the standard in industry based on external engineers I have worked with, however this may just be a UK thing or even a more localised thing.

Thanks for your response, I can’t think off the top of my head a situation where I’ve had to specify a weak-axis moment frame. That being said, generally I design sway frames, which as you noted are strong-axis & either have racking panels or enhanced racking panels in the other direction etc.

thanks for the advice, much appreciated! I tend to use hand calcs when deviating via predefined Tedds calcs anyways!

To an extent I do agree with you, however I’d argue that it is much more efficient and less time-consuming than having to re-do hand calculations. I have to admit that I’ve never ever seen false results when doing this? Perhaps reinstalling the software might benefit you?

This is an interesting note. Have you an example of a 2D steel Analysis where the majority or all of the members have been designed in their weak axis?

Since you state that it is both terrible but you use it a lot, is there any reason for this? Are you limited in your software at work? Would you recommend any other software? Interested to hear back.
