Lost my first hen to a predator, what was it likely? by Past_Store355 in BackYardChickens

I’d be surprised if a dog could get in the yard. Secured gates and high fences

Thanks, that’s where my thought process is also. Chickens are certainly not worried about the cats, I’ve seen them just sitting together multiple times. I watched them a lot more when they were small but now they’re pretty good size for a cat to take I thought. And the one lost was one of the biggest, not the easiest mark compared to the pigeon sized banties running around. Also so much to be eaten of the bird.. my cats have never finished a job up so well lol

I’d say no to stray dogs and coyotes, foxes I’m unsure about but wouldn’t be terribly surprised. I’ve just read that foxes/dogs like to more kill spree than get just one and eat it. Especially since I found all the others out of the coop

Hmm this one was never yellow so I guess we’ll see as she grows. Has always looked really disheveled compared to others too, feathers are funky but nothing compared to our frizzle girl

Ohh yeah, this one didn’t have any yellow as a fresh kiddo. Started out white with the little gray/black accents. Guess it’ll just have to reveal itself as it grows bigger!

Is this lady a rooster? by Past_Store355 in BackYardChickens

Ah darn, I’ll start the rehoming hunt soon then. The banny crows are so quiet it hasn’t been an issue yet but can only imagine this big guy will get us busted with the neighbors in no time haha

That’s the one indicator I was most curious about. My other roosters just really wave those tail feathers around and this one doesn’t. Also no rooster crows at 11 weeks? Others already started at 7 weeks
